I have a Leatherwood CMR as well. I kind of had the same sentiment, and thought WTH and bought one. I have to agree with everything you said, it still surprises me how well it performs...and I love the reticle, and the zero stop works really well. Great scope.

CMMG has a handful of nitride barrels in various calibers. Here is a 14.5" 4150, 1/7, with a pinned flash hider. It appears to be a chromed bore and nitride exterior? Might want to call and get clarification. Link

If that is the range you are looking at, you may want to consider The Midway Weaver 3-10X40 Tactical. It is one of the few decent scopes in that price range that is MIL/MIL. When dialing elevation for longer distance, it is pretty common to use MIL turrets with a MIL based reticle, or MOA/MOA...

Yeah, the idea is that bi-pod will keep it in place. Mine stays, but it is much more than hand tight. I like that set screw idea.

The IOR 3.5-18 X 50 is a 35mm tube, but it comes with rings (height is your choice). That model has a solid reputation and the glass is definitely alpha scope territory. They can be had for about $1800.

I have an AD-SCOUT-S in 30mm along with many other ADM Recons in a couple of flavors. Not an issue, a single lever works just fine, plenty solid. Dual levers is just a nice security blanket...two is one, and one is none.
