I know I am going to have to find a load my rifle likes. I have a rem 700 5r 24" barrel in .308. It's favorite load for 100 yards is 41.5g of varget pushing a 175 smk. I am looking for a good 1000 yard load, what has everyone else used at this range?

Re: 1000 yard load

have you tried that? im running 42.5g of varget with 175 smk threw my 20in barrel and it will do ok at 1000, if i were you i would just go out and start trying with that load and see what happens

Re: 1000 yard load

If you, the rifle and the load all shoot well at 100...what are you looking for a new load for?
Send it to a grand. If it doesn't work...start practicing at a shorter distance cause the gun and load shouldn't be the problem.

Re: 1000 yard load

168 Custom Comp 44.5gr Varget
155 Palma 45.5gr Varget
168 AMAX 44.6gr Varget.

No problem getting to 1000 and beyond but 175s would be ideal.

Re: 1000 yard load

I just don't know what the velocity would be using such a small powder load, thought some extra velocity could help

Re: 1000 yard load

you should see another node around 43.0-44 gr. That should get your 175 to 1000 yds w/o any problems.

Re: 1000 yard load

I strongly suspect that you will want 44.5-45.0 gr Varget (possibly up to 45.5 gr) to push 175s fast enough for 1000 yards service.

Re: 1000 yard load

just got back from the range with my 175's with 42.5, shot fine at 1000, pushed them out to 1135 and were "ok". but 1000 was fine for me.

If its anything like when I tried 45grs Varget with 168s it wont be pretty, if I were you Id try 47.5grs of 2000MR and switch to the 178 Hornady HPBT.

Re: 1000 yard load

43-44 gr of Varget using a 175 will get you to 1K no problem. Your velocity should be around 2650

Re: 1000 yard load

I started with heavier loads, but learned over time that the gun was happier, and I was happier, with lower charge weights.

42.5 grains of Varget under a 175 bullet happens to be my 1000 yard load for the .308 and it's the best one I've come up with in the 5R that I shoot. My buddy uses 41.5 grains, but has a barrel that's five inches longer than my 5R. Both loads shoot great at 1000 yards.

Heavier charges yielded no improvement in performance, except on very windy days, of course.

Re: 1000 yard load

Here is my recipe for my 5R
Collet neck sized R-P brass trimmed to 2.008
CCI BR2 primer
43.5gns varget
175 SMK
2.232" ogive, 2.808" COAL
2567 fps

Also try this one
Collet neck sized R-P brass trimmed to 2.008
CCI BR2 primer
47.5gns CFE 223
175 SMK
2.252" ogive, 2.828" COAL
2730 fps

Re: 1000 yard load

Is the 180gr Hornady SST out of the question for .308? I use it for 30-06, and just found out that my 20" .308 LTR loves it at 100 yards - don't want to attempt longer ranges if it useless though.

Roger That... and that is 44gr for a DI gun... gas gun for those in Rio Linda.

Re: 1000 yard load

My 1000 yard shooting has been limited, but I use 42.9 g go Varget and had no trouble getting there

I have a 20 MOA base on my 700 5r and it takes 39.5 MOA @ 1000

Re: 1000 yard load

My go to load in my GAP 5R 22" 1-11.25" twist barrel is:

Lapua brass - Full length sized
CCI BR2 Primer
45.1 gr Varget
175 SMK
2.224" to ogive
2710 fps

Just flat out shoots. This load is compressed but have never seen a pressure sign once in anything from 20 deg to 115 deg, gotta love Varget.
