i looked at a southbend lathe 10x28 yesterday and the guy wants $1500. it comes with 3 jaw and 4 jaw and lathe with tailstock. wondering if this seems like an ok dealing i am haveing a buddy that runs a lathe daily look it over to make sure everything is in working condition.

Depending on what kind of wear and tear there is on the machine, that's not a bad deal.
Does it come with a toolpost holder at all? Be sure to check the slop on the cross slide and compount rest, and see if there are any excessive wear points along the ways.
I would definately have it fired up if you could, just so you can make sure there aren't any noises there shouldn't be.

i had my gunsmith come take a look at it and everything looks to be in good condition he thinks i will need to put new bushings in it and fix a bolt other than that i needs a good cleaning. i am just wondering what they are worth.

this lathe is in really good shape except the bolt i have to replace and lots of dirt. we ran it for about 10 minutes checking run out and messing with it. it comes with stand,3in and 4in chuck, 2 tool holders, set of steel cutters, tailstock dead center and 1 magnetic dial indicator. i bought it for 1200 and its only 10 blocks from my house. i think its a good deal. i have another 1000 for tools such as a quick change tool post and carbide bits, keyless chuck for tail stock and steady rest. i am also planning on getting a good chuck. that should get me started down a long expensive path of spending money on machining tools.

You will be surprised whats going to eat into that extra $1000 for tooling. I have been tooling up for the last month, but I have the added expense of a mill as well. $1000 doesn't go very far when it comres to machine tools. Good luck and be safe, especially moving it.
