I did a search here and didnt see a thread discussing the 155 Sierra Palma and the 175 SMK head to head,,I dont understand how a 155 has the exact same BC as a 175 bullet in the same caliber,,it never even crossed my mind to try the 155 out to 800-1000 yards,,

is the BC inflated or will it really shoot like a 175 at the same speeds?? I mean if you can get 3,000 fps with the 155 and 2700 with the 175 and they both have the same BC why wouldnt I use the 155?
I am sure this has been covered but I cant find it,,a link to the thread or anybody shoot enough Palma matches to explain to me how different the 155 at 2950 - 3000 fps would compare to the 175 at 2675 out to 1,000-1,100 yards,,

I get to 1300yrds with the 155. It's my best grouping round in all of my calibers/etc. ~1/3MOA consistently

I've posted a shit ton of data about it here over the years but the search function apparently sucks so...

Seems like there are only a few non palma shooters using the 155's getting a reliable accurate 3000 fps seems to be a challenge. Especially in less than the 28" and 30" barrels. The closest f class to me only shoots 600. I run the 155 Berger's there as I get better scores. I have shot the sierra 175 and the Berger 185 hybrid. I do enjoy the less recoil of the 155. I keep thinking about getting a 28" 14" twist barrel to try more on the 155. It seems as the 155 BC is a bit high on the sierra, but it may be because you have to hit them hard to get there.

Since you guys seem to have tried or observed many things, let me ask you what would be the best I could do bullet wise with a 308 16" 1-12 barrel. This is in a SCAR17 which is impressively accurate and consistent to shoot for a gasser but why in the world did they put that barrel on the thing.

The 155 Scdenar has almost the exact same shape as the 175 SMK, shape determiines BC. Inside the 155 Scenar has a hollow nose where the 20gr of lead would have been.

1200-1250 yards is the supersonic point at STP, with some altitude 1300 yards is feasible.

BC is acceptably close (Litz)

I get 2925-2950 fps from a 24" tube with Scenars and 2650 fps with 175 SMKs.

155s have 30MoA drop to 1000 yards while 175 SMKs have 39MoA drop.

Windage is better on the 175s, though, because its a heavier bullet and it takes the side force of the wind longer to accelerate the bullet inthe horizontal direction than it takes the same wind on the 155s.

Flater shooting, more windage. It is arguably harder to shoot the 155s at long range due to the greater windage term. Drop is just a setting on the turret. Windage is a reading done with the eye, and tricky at best.

thanx guys,,over the last couple days I have been working up slowly from my 42 gr Varget 175 SMK load and hit another accuracy node at 45 grs even,,I was at 2590 with 42 grs and am getting 2735 from 26" 700 Police 12 twist barrel,,those extra 145 fps gets me to 1,050 5.5 minutes flatter,,I am gonna load and shoot the 5 same cases until the primer pockets give up and decide then if the extra speed is worth shorter brass life,,

I am loading at max AICS mag length and Lapua brass neck sized only,,I have zero pressure signs at 45 grs Varget but am still gonna test 5 cases for primer pocket life span with the hotter load,,

the 175 is maybe the best all around 308 load but I may try the 208-210 gr bullets to shoot from 800 out,,may not be worth the trouble to run two loads in the same rifle but I would like a little better performance at and past 1,000 than the 175`s,,

I am gonna rebarrel to some 6.5 or 7mm round next winter,,leaning to the 6.5x47 Lapua,,

The Berger 155's end up being long.... They are a thin point, I can't close my 308 ammo cases with them in there. I have not put them in a mag but I believe there longer than a 308 mag loaded.
