I bought Litz's book, it's really an excellent resource. He talks about the 168 SMK having squirrely behavior around 600-800 yards, depending on variables. Litz says this is probably due to the steep boat tail angle of the 168 SMK.

I noticed that the 168 A-MAX has nearly the same steep boat tail angle.

So does the 168 A-MAX have the same long range issues as the 168 SMK?

Thanks.

Use the 178 AMAX if you plan on shooting over 800 yards.

I think a lot of it depends on the velocity you're launching them at. They're an inherently accurate bullet, it's just many people shoot them out of shorter 18", 20", even 22" barrels and you're losing a bit of velocity at 1000yds.

This being said, if you want to shoot at 1k, there are better choices out there such as a 155gr Scenar/SMK/Berger type launched at 2950ish.

Even the 175/178gr class will hold speed better out to 1k.

In my experience, not completely. I've shot both at 1k and the 168 AMAX does FAR better than the SMK. I've gotten decently consistant hits at 1k with the 168 AMAX whereas the 168 SMK was a complete crap shoot. Having said that, I don't think the 168 AMAX is the ideal bullet for beyond about 800-900 yds. Side by side, same day, same gun - 168 AMAXs were still less accurate than the 175 SMKs and 178 AMAXs (FOR ME).

Neither is ideal for 1Kyds. I've shot 168AMAX's to ~925yds with good results but beyond that it becomes inconsistent.

Either get 155's@2900fps or 175/178's.
