Well, I finally got around to sighting in a zeroing my scope. I have to say that I'm impressed with my Savage. I love this gun. I put 40+ rounds through it at felt absolutely no discomfort at all. Its a far cry from my 30.06. When I finally got it on paper, I really started having fun with it. I didn't do too bad for 100 yards and my first time shooting it. I didn't use a bag to steady the rifle, only my shoulder and the bi-pod. I did pretty well considering how shaky and unsteady I can be. I can't wait to test her at 200 yards and farther soon

Thats my rifle, savage FCP-K. You will love it, the shoulder gets no abuse, but I feel bad for the people sitting next to me having to hear the brake working!

Anyways, what ammo did you use? Try FGMM 168 or 175's or some southwest windchester 175's. You should be able to tighten those groups up to .75moa easily, and even .5moa or lower(some people get that with handrolls)

Welcome to the brotherhood of the barrel-nut. You made a great choice. Now its time to polish those skills and head to some competitions.

FYI a B&C or other major manufacture stock if properly installed will easily tighten those groups up. That is easily the worst part of a stock savage.

Good luck,
Merritt

dang i love that range and backstop. once you get a good round or load or brand that shoots better than the rest you will love it even more

Yea, I'm using some Lellier & Bellot 147g Bulk crap. I picked up 500 rounds for $240. I plan on using 168 g in the future when I start loading my own!

Re: 1st range report and photos for Savage

I broke in a new rifle this week and there was a world of difference between the bulk ammo I used for sighting in the scope and the FGMM I switched to after I was zeroed. Still, your groups are not bad shooting for a new gun, bulk ammo, and a bipod.

I had to laugh when I saw the times on your photos. That's exactly what I did this week. Out to the range just after dawn and could only shoot for a couple hours before the heat got up. When I started getting mirage in the scope at 120 yards, I knew it was time to hit the A/C. I've got a 10 FP waiting in the safe to be shot for the first time but it's hard to get much done when you're dodging the heat. It won't be long now though......

Yea I hear you on the heat. I got to the range a little after 0700 and it was already 91 degrees. I can't wait for October, when the weather gets perfect for shooting!

I'm honestly surprised that stuff worked for you. my rifle is so picky that I've went through 5-6 bulk/cheap ammo selections before giving up. they all made my bolt sieze after shooting! the only cheap ammo that ended up working is the American eagle 150gr.

I'm excited about the weather cooling down too. I usually go to the range at around noon so here in Phoenix I've already got used baking in the sun at 105-118 while shooting. The funniest is the 115+ days around noon when at 100 yards the mirage is so bad that the target is as fuzzy as if I was looking at it at 500 yards with a cheap tasco.

Well said. Last time I went out with my new SS 5-20 I could hardly see my target at 100 yards.

OP- I am sure you will enjoy your rifles and welcome to the world of savages.
