2 part question, 5RvsTikka Tac and caliber choice?

Trying to decide b/w a Remington 5R and a Tikka Tactical rifle. Both are close in price, both have had great reviews. I know the Rem has an abundance of aftermarket parts but I have also heard that the Tikka does not need as much tuning to get it to where it needs to be.
My other dilemma is deciding b/w 308 and 300win. I will mostly be in the 100-600yds ranges but our range is building a 1000yd range which I will try eventually. I do reload. Whichever I get will be topped with a NF NXS F1.

I'm very partial to Tikka's, but a lot of guys are having very good success with their 5r's. The smooth bolt and 70* lift really are nice on the Tikka, though.

As far as caliber, if your only going to shoot paper out to 1000 yds, go with the .308. Cheaper to shoot, less recoil, longer barrel life. Win, win, win.

If you need downrange energy, the .300 shoots flatter and hits harder, but be prepared to buy a brake. You'll also replace the barrel about 3x as fast as the .308.

Don't know much about the tikka but I have a 5R and will never ever look back. It is a solid .5 moa gun with my hand loads and alittle under 1 moa with factory hornady tap

I have a Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm-08 and it is smooth as can be. I do not own a Remington 700 of any kind so it is hard for me to compare. I know I am going with 308 now, and I seriously have not gotten one bad message on here or anywhere else about either the 5R or the Tikka Tac. Too bad I can't afford both!

I have had a several remmys and sold most to get my tikkas. The tikkas in my opinion feel nicer and most cases shoot better.

I have owned TWO Remmy 5R's....decked one out with new stock,Jewell trigger, Tubb firing pin,etc...and a Tikka Tactical (.308) and two Tikka Lite's.

All shooting done with factory match ammo..Black Hills and Federal 168gr.

Shooting them side by side the Tikka Tactical (and the Lite's) would out shoot the 5R every time. I was pretty bummed...I had read all I could on the 5R and then bought two of them only to sell them.

If you want a out of the box shooter and plan to do little or no mods...then my vote is the Tikka.
If you want/plan on re-stocking, replacing trigger,etc.,...them the Remmy will be your best bet.

man, those are some nice looking toys! Just the kind of info I was looking for...a side by side comparison. I think at most I MIGHT get a new stock eventually if I got the Tikka, other than that I would keep it pretty stock. the Remington, I would get a new stock, detech mag and poss a trigger. Thanks for the reply. D@mn I love the look of that Tikka!

Yeah...I kick myself for selling the Tikka. It had the 24" barrel that you can no longer get. Now they are all 20" in the tactical models.

If your going to jump out of planes or beat the crap out of the rifle the Remmy will be a better gun for you.
If your just a casual shooter/hunter who wants a really accurate rifle out of the box...I would get the Tikka.

I have a 700 5r 308 and a tikka t3 lite. I haven't done as much load work with the tikka, but they shoot about the same. I'm sure with some load work the tikka will shoot tighter. The action on the tikka is just a joy to cycle. I definately like the feel of the tikka better.

One or the other, I'd probably go with the tikka.

edit: Just had to add a WTF to beretta for not importing the 260....

someone had a 24" Tikka Tactical for sale on gunbroker not too long ago...had I know I could not get them anymore I would have jumped all over it!!

The Tikka is throated shorter than a factory Rem. so you can reach the lands with bullets that don't like extended jumps.

Mine shoots 1/2 moa or better, but so does my custom Rem. 700 that cost over twice as much. Which one do I shoot the most, no contest it is the Remmy. When I get behind the Rem. with a McMillan A-5 it is so comfortable and everything just feels right. With the Tikka Tac., yes it shoots fine but not the rewarding feel of the Rem. The Tikka does a good job, but the Remmy does it with style, and a lot of added expense.

i can't talk about remmy, but i own a t3 tact, and i'm very satisfied. very accurate and ,thanks to roedale precision, is also very aggressive... ah, at 1000 mt, ten rounds was into about 15 cm! (0.5 MOA at 1000 mt)

I have a remmy PSS 700 300WM, its had a new trigger plus an AICS stock. Lovely rifle but had to spend quiet a bit to get it where I want.
I love shooting the 300WM but it costs a hell of a lot more than the 308 and recoil can be an issue for some with heavy loads and lots of rounds. Barrel life as someone already said is also sh1te. However when shooting 500 yards against the 308 boys at our range (on the moors and very windy) it has its advantages.

I also have Tikkas in .243 and .270 - both are phenominal straight out of the box. I would have got one in .223 but couldn't get hold of the 1/8 twist so had to go with a Remmy (again paying extra for AICS stock and mag conversion to .223) My next 308 will be a Tikka - especially now the likes of Manners and Roedale are doing upgrades.
