22 creedmoor

You're reading a lot into my statement. Nowhere did I advocate running over-pressure loads.

It's a simple reality that there are presently only TWO brass manufacturers that will actually allow you to run most cartridges at their advertised capabilities. Alpha, and Lapua.

Just because the brass doesn't instantly crack in half, doesn't mean the brass can actually take the pressure... though I think it would be better if that would be the case since most people are using inferior brass and suffering the consequences, but they don't notice. Most people aren't trying to get very many firings out of their brass, so they don't even realize what is happening.

Good stuff here Greg- thanks!

So I figured I would chime in. Take this advise for what it’s worth. I was shooting 77 gr Berger OTM’s with 4350. I can’t remember the exact charge as I am not sitting at my bench. Long story short was fighting carbon ring and pressure issues with a very mild load. Went and looked at some retumbo data and came up with these numbers. I’m still working on seating depths and fine tuning it. But again at 45.0 grains it’s very mild and shoots really well. Did make a bullet switch to 77 gr otm scenars. Single digit SD’s so far and will go to a ten shot string shortly. Maybe Sunday as I have a date with some prairie dogs tomorrow. Barrel is a carbonsix and zermatt origin short action.

I shot the Berger 77gr OTM’s with 42.2 of H4350, average of 3390fps from a 22” 7 twist. It was on the edge, some swipe and minimal cratering but bolt lift wasn’t noticeable. So you like Retumbo over H4350 With this bullet? Its hard to turn away from a load that shoots excellent to chase improvement with a different powder, for me. CCI450 and Alpha ocd brass, for anyone wondering.

If you’re not having carbon problems I would stay where you are. I would be staying if it wouldn’t carbon buildup and cause pressure. I am hoping slowing the burn rate down I can prevent most of the carbon at the start of the bore.

What barrel maker? Do you know the bore size? I'm wanting a 7 twist for my 16 or 18" build but can only find 218 bore vs desired 219. Lots of people have had jacket failures once the barrel gets a lil fire cracking. I just don't want to be one of they guys with a problem.

Bartlein barrel, Joe Walls/Exodus Rifles chambered it I may have the freebore # somewhere but I don’t know it as I sit here on the recliner. I haven’t seen any of the otm’s explode (yet), but I have read about the vld’s having that at high rpm. I am trying 73gr Hammer Hunters with StaBall soon though, partially out of concern for bullet integrity and partially because I want a ‘hunting’ bullet.

I shot a few antelope with my 22" 7.7tw 22 creed last year using the 70gr absolute hammer. Stiff load of rl26 pushing them at 3700fps. Load shot sub 2" groups at 400y consistently. The hammer had a decent wound channel, and killed well. The bc is dogshit but at lighting speed, drops are pretty good out to 500y. I'm building another currently with a magnesium element 4.0 folding chassis and a short barrel for strictly supressed. Trying to find a 219 bore 7tw barrel currently.

Has anyone tried h1000 or retumbo with an 80gr Berger or hornady bullet with a 1:8 twist?

I tried it with 77tmk, full case with a drop tube, believe around 46.5-47gr was only getting 3320 from a 22" barrel. It'd work better with heavier bullets I feel. H4350 pressured out arpund the same velocity, rl16 was near 3400. N555 shoots very well at 3400 and 3500. 3500 is too warm to run on hot days, but anything below 75 its good to go. Rl26 will flat out scream near 3600, rl23 does well around 3400 as well.

Krieger 7T 22" MTU 4G
Impact 737R
Hornady 88gn ELD-M
ADG 22 Creedmoor brass
Federal Gold Medal LR primer
RL26 41.7gn
3169 avg

10 shots

Says my photos are too large to upload, but the groups are really nice. Will be switching to Superformance I need my RL26 for a 7SAUM upcoming. It's in a Petersen load data sheet for 80.5's so I'll try it out. 88's fly nice, no problems with jackets or anything else. Very accurate. One of the most accurate rifles I have, satisfying to shoot and low recoil. I don't even run a brake it's threaded and capped on the muzzle.

Here's some actual 22 Creedmoor load data, lol.

H414, converted Alpha SRP 6 Creedmoor brass, 22" Carbon Six 1:7.7", CCI450, 60gr VMAX

38gr - 2990fps *hangfires, this powder appears to need at least 41 - 42gr to avoid hangfires.

42.5gr - 3550fps (this fills to the body/ shoulder junction)
I have experienced more hang fires with this round than any other, I was using Federal AR match primers because that is what I had the most of. Switched to CCI SR magnums and haven't had anymore trouble.

I'm really surprised more hang fires isn't reported. Remember years ago working with the 22 CHeetah using the old F.L. Remington BR brass and small rifle primers, till we hit near maximum loads we had hang fires especially as the weather got colder. Changing over to 243 brass and large primers the problem went completely away. Guess the powders today may be easier to ignite.

I've got around 500rnds through mine and havent had one hang fire, SRP Lapua brass with 4831sc

Yeah I do not have any hang fires with 4831. I am using 45 grains under an 88 ELDM at 2.760" OAL. It is a little crunchy when seating a bullet.

3150fps out of a 22" barrel.
That is very close to my load, I am using 90gr bergers with 43.5 gr of 4831sc at about 3200 out of 26" barrel.

Looking for a starting load for 80gr bergers with h4350. Alpha srp brass. My apologies if I missed it earlier. Thanks in advance.

Anyone build one of these in 16-18”

Thinking a 16.5 suppressed package shooting 77 and 80.5 grain projectile will be awesome to carry around

My 18" 7tw will be done next week. Running tbac ultra7. Have 200x pcs alpha ocd brass. Will be running 85.5 bergers as I picked up 1k of em last month. Also have 88 eldm and 75 eldm to run. My last barrel was 22" 8tw running 77tmk at 3400 fps with N555.

Looking forward to hearing more.

I’d be running similar with an ultra 7 but would probably go 16.5”. 80.5, 85.5 bergers and 77tmk. I’m wondering where velocity will end up, I don’t want 77s going too fast for shooting deer, but a little more steam than my current 223 in a much shorter package would be awesome. Plus the ability to run a heavier bullet for coyotes and prairie dogs in the wind.

85s will go 3100 I'm sure, 88s will be mid 3000s. I'd assume 77s should go 3200+

I was getting bad carbon ring with 4350. I switched to retumbo being the slower burning powder to help alleviate the problem. So far so good but only a couple hundred rounds down the tube.

16” 22 creed

88’s @ 3040 fps

80.5 @ 3090 fps

75 eld’s @ 3110 fps

H4350 used. I’m not home to pull actual charge weights. I jump them all .050”

This barrel has roughly 900 rds down the tube and is still performing at acceptable levels (no bleed off and 3/4” moa with the occasional 1/2” moa.

Solid numbers from a 16"! Do you know how much freebore your chamber was cut with?

Results from my 22 creed build.

18" bartlein 1/8 .219 rem varmint. Chambered by straight jacket

75g ELD-M
alpha non ocd brass
cci 450
2.100 CBTO
42g H4350

ran 41-42.5g through the chrony and settled on 42g going 3287 (one of the first 20 rounds through the barrel) hoping it settles down around 3350-3400 once broke in.

immediately went and sighted in with my thermal (to get going on the early season) and it bugholed 2x 5 shot groups. Since then i have shot less than 10 rounds through the rifle and have 7 coyotes on the ground anywhere from 75yds to 340yds (1 was a runner i shot at 3 times). This setup HAMMERS for night hunting.

once i get 100 rounds or so on it i'll measure the lands, check for any signs of carbon ring, and see where my speeds are, if necessary i might lower the charge a touch to be a little easier on it

What is ideal freebore for 88 eldm 90 atips? I have a 22 cal throater, but smiths reamer is 0.100fb for lighter stuff. I went 7tw 219 bore diameter on the barrel. I have a pile of 85.5 bergers, 88 eldm, and 90 atips.

I took these measurements back when my barrel had 400 rds on it. Thought I’d share…

22 creed data

400 rds down the pipe.

Projectile with the blue is just touching. The projectile without sharpie is a dummy round .015” off the lands from the barrel when it was fresh. Roughly .060” throat erosion. Typically from what I’ve seen with less aggressive cartridges (non overbore chambers) and what I’ve read, .010” is typical every 100 or so rounds.

So essentially my findings bring me to .015” erosion ever 100 rounds. You gotta pay to play.

0.015 per hundred is quite aggressive, truthfully, the worst I've heard. A 28 Nosler running N570 is around 0.011/per hundred in findings with 2 barrels burnt. I didn't notice near as much as youre measuring on my first 22 creed barrel. I think I burnt maybe 0.025 in the first 400 rounds and just quit measuring as it still shot the 77s extremely well at what was 20k off at 400 round mark. I will have to pay closer attention to my new barrel.

I’m limited on resources (I.e measuring equipment that would provide an absolute). That said .004” difference (essentially the thickness of a piece of loose leaf paper) from your 28 Nosler seems logical….

One to many variables at play to say my results are typically. Cadence of shooting, barrel composition, etc. I believe for my intended use without neutering the cartridges capabilities, an 18” with a slightly slower powder would be the ticket (3125-3175 ft ps with a 75/85grain pill).

Getting components for something I am going to try, a sig cross and rebarrel it. Get some srp Peterson 22cm brass, have rl26 and some berger 90s. Coyote and deer gun.

Thinking of a 20" but will consider 22 IF it nets me a lot more fps. It's a lightweight build I am looking to do, so either a fluted or cf barrel. It will be suppressed 100% of the time.

Has anyone ran solids in these? Hold up better to high velocities over copper jacketed?

Anyone have a reamer they suggest?

73 gr absolute hammers, 3700 fps with a case full of rl26 in a 22" 8tw barrel. Shoots very well! Killed both my antelope and a mule deer with them last year. Bc is dog shit though. Have a new 7tw barrel at 18" and am eyeing the badlands bulldozer 2 70gr bullets for that.

I kinda went after the bergers due to high bc. But 3700 fps is blow my mind speed. "It doesn't need to be aerodynamic when it teleports to the target" kinda speed. I have a 1:8 twist 22-250 with a 22 inch barrel but it does not seem very fast. It might get rebarreled or at minimum rechambered. But my initial post is for an entirely different gun.

I have a 22 Creed coming. Here are my components. Curious where you all would start?

Alpha SRP brass.
CCI 450's
Berger 85.5's

The powders I have that I would like to use are H4350 or H1000. I have RL 26 also. But I use a lot of that for a few other cartridges and would rather not use it for the 22 Creed.

Any suggestions on starting points with H4350 or H1000?

Regards, Branden

Load development with rl 26 done, 48.3, should make some 90 grain bergers fly.

Alright, just kidding, don't even have a barrel or a rifle for this brass yet, but hope to soon find a good deal on a sig cross in first light camo and either a fluted 20" or carbon fiber. Looking to make a decent, but lightweight hunting rifle for yotes and deer. Time will tell.

FWIW, i tested 39g of varget pushing a 69 TMK, vs my current load of 42g H4350 pushing a 75 ELD-M and came up with almost identical chrono numbers, using the same 2.100 CBTO, SRP, and peterson brass (18" going 3275 still speeding up, only ~40rds on the barrel)
