Hi All,
Do you have any recommendation on what a person would do for a 1:8 Twist 18-22"ish .223 Bolt gun with threaded barrel?
I'd like to give a Savage a shot, but can't find anything besides the cheapo axis.
I'm looking for $500-900 range and sub-moa.
I have a Rem 700 HS Precision stock that is laying around, but can't find a Rem 700 SA in .223 with threaded barrel.
I really don't want to get into major $$$ buying a barrel and sending it off to be threaded.
I kind of looked into a Stevens action, and then buying a Savage barrel. Cost would add up though, and not sure if it would shoot decent. I've never built a bolt gun before.

not many factory rifles come with a 1:8 twist. and not many come pre threaded.

I think tikka may make a 1:8 but thats all I know of for factory.

Your best bet, IMHO, would probably be to find a donor savage action or a cheap steven 200 or something. buy a criterion or shilen barrel from Northland Shooter Supply on savage shooters.

Jim will thread it for you but im not sure what the wait time is(i think its decently long) or have a smith do it for you when they install it (if you dont have the tools).

I have a CBI on my 6.5 and will be getting one with a 1:7 or 8 for my .223. (I may go AI with the .223) the CBI's are nice and only about $300.

Savage or Stevens base model-- $350(could probably find a better deal)
CBI Barrel--$300
Plus smith work-- Not sure maybe $100 or so?

about $700 or so for what you want. then add a nice stock and everything else when you get a chance. could add a Choate or similar stock for around $200 I believe.

Re: .223 Bolt surppressor host?

Tikka has an 8 twist that comes with a threaded barrel, I was reserching this several months ago and got a savage 12vlp dbm with a 7 twist barrel for around 900 and had it threaded.
The tikka looked like a good option, but the stock choices are much more limited thats why I went with the savage and got a CDI bottom metal.

Re: .223 Bolt surppressor host?

Thank you for the info.
I'd really like to try and build something myself, so I think I'll start studying up on building a savage. Wait time isn't an issue.
If I wanted to drop $1200+ I'd do the Tikka T3 Tactical, but I don't think I want to spend that much on this set-up.

How does the 12vlp shoot? I would assume you are hand-loading for it?

Re: .223 Bolt surppressor host?

Savage is phasing out the Stevens 200 for the crappy Axis. I get so annoyed with Savage changing things on their rifles every few years.

Axis is an ugly rifle with no aftermarket stocks. I'm probably going to buy one in 223 for my 300blackout build. I've been trying to find a 223 Stevens 200, but no luck so far.
