i was wondering why the good 'ole 270 winchester is'nt as popular in the long range crowd as in the hunting crowd? it is an excellent cartridge in my opinion. midway usa says it is the number one selling cartridge in the usa. i load a hornady sst with h4831sc and it doesn't break 1000 lbs of energy until 900 yards. i'm just curious why it does'nt have a bigger following? all input is appreciated.

Re: 270 winchester

Because .284 has a better range of VLD slugs?

Re: 270 winchester

Mainly because none of the mainstream bullet makers make ultra high BC .277 bullets. The reason they don't is that most .270s are 1 in 10" twist and wouldn't stabilize super long ultra high BC bullets. If someone made a fast twisted .270 and you stuffed it with capable bullets, it would hang with a 6.5-06 or .280 all day long.

Re: 270 winchester

.495 BC actually IS pretty bad compared to offerings in 6.5mm, 7mm, and 30 cal with BC over .6.

I really like the SST for hunting, though. Great deer bullet.

Re: 270 winchester

Berger's 150gr VLD has a BC of .531, and the 135gr Matchking is .488...which is better than the 168 SMK. You could probably push the SMK around 3000fps, with the VLD in the 2850-2900fps ballpark.

Conversely, you could push a 123gr Scenar (.547 BC) to 3000fps from a 260 Rem/Creedmoor/x47.

Less powder, less recoil, better ballistics.

270's killed a LOT of game, though...

I love the .270 myself.

Re: 270 winchester

i've not noticed any problems with it out to 1000. but i have'nt shot any of the fancy cartridges out there, just the old tried and trued cartridges of yesteryear. anyone have anything else to add? how about someone else's range reports?

I understand what your saying. My point was that for a bullet that "light", it has a decent BC. So it should be able to be pushed pretty fast. In theory anyway, not like I have any experience actually trying it
