Whats up Guys, I wanted to share this little video I made shooting the Savage 110BA 338 Lapua at a distance of 2707 yards. I was using 300gr Berger bullets traveling at 2740 FPS. This shot required about 35 mils of hold over, with the nightforce NXS I was able to dial 27.5 mils, back the magnification off to 13X and use the bottom of the 5 mil reticle. With a flight time of just over 5 seconds it comes in pounding with 740ft-lbs of energy at 1.54mi away. Let me know if you enjoyed the video, thanks!

Nice shooting and good job filming it; how many rounds to get on targets? Are you using the Target Cam and if yes, you probably had an extra antenna for over 2700 yards? Gotta love the "bullet in flight" pic.
As you were talking about solids (bullets) and Cutting Edge, in a recent post; did you get to try them that far yet, or you are still working on it?
Always enjoy your vids, good stuff and good shooting.

Thanks Ombre, it took a staggering 21 shots to get on target, I was hoping to get it within 10 shots. I'd love to use a target cam but all I have right now to help out is the walkies. I think I can build one for not that much, need to look into that. I didn't even notice that the camera caught the bullet until I was editing and going frame by frame, pretty cool huh? I haven't taken to distance yet but I will be putting them in a head to head test with the Bergers for accuracy and penetration, should be exciting! I'm still working out the load but so far I've gotten two 5 round groups with 3 or 4 holes touching putting the groups under 1/2" at 200 yards and still under an inch with the flyer. These look to be real promising.

Wow that's some serious small groups right there, i bet you could consistently hit a torso target past a mile with that setup.

I hope so. I have been working on my abilities, as I know they are far less than what this rifle can do.
I was shooting some old loads I had worked up before I had the rifle rebuilt, and was tickled pink with their performance at various distances up to 1035 yards. I then tested some OBT loads at 400 yards, and got one group of less than .3 MOA. I still have trouble with reading wind though, so I cannot consistently duplicate that. On a calm day, I can do it, but it is very easy to see horizontal issues in my groups----I attribute that to my lack of wind reading skill, as the horizontal spread is quite consistent within a test group. I also just got a magneto-speed chrony, so my chronographing records will be more accurate. Can't wait to take my rifle to 500 yards on my next grouping test set.

Looking forward to see what these will do at 2000 +; I checked the ones you were talking about, 278 MTAC, all specs look good on paper. Gotta give some speed to these babies, 2800 required and velocity calculated at 3100 FPS...they are flying fast. Are you using H1000, or a different powder? I see that a minimum twist of 1-9.5 is required with these bullets, your Savage is GTG, my TRG does not fit the profile at 1-10. I also looked at the price, they do not come cheap but then again, anyone shooting the .338LM has a permanent hole in the wallet, gotta feed the beast, as well as our addiction ;)

I'm still using H1000 powder, I've got a load narrowed down that is pushing around 2950, I just want to see how they do at 500 yards before I confirm the load. Your right about the price, they cost about 2x the price of the 300gr berger's, I feel the extra cost would be worth it if I see noticeable accuracy improvements. I should have more information on this project within a week, as long as the weather stays good here.

I really enjoy watching your videos…they are presented well and I'm sure very time consuming to set-up. Keep them coming as they are well appreciated!

Sorry if I missed it but what do do think your velocity is at this range with the 300's? I've only shot my 338 Lapua out to a measly 1760 yards (lol)…and your videos are spurring me on to even reach out further.

The velocity according to my ballistic program says its 1052 fps at the target, the sound barrier up here is 1147 fps. glad the videos are inspiring you to shoot further!!

There seems to be a lot of space out in Colorado to do ELR shooting for that I am jealous! That was a well made video and some nice shooting. I can only one day hope to be able to have the skill to shoot that far. Congrats!

Tons of space in the Mojave, we used to go out there and practically nuke targets with no one in sight. Or get on the road to Vegas and pretty much turn off anywhere. Yeah you gota drive but it's easy of your gonna make a day of it.

Ok so I'm a little confused then. If you dialed 27.5 mils in the scope which is actually .2 mils more than the NXS is rated to have but probably doable, then your 100 yard zero would have to be perfectly at the very bottom of your travel. Doesn't happen very often but I could buy it as shit does happen. You also say that you could keep a 100 yard zero with a 40 MOA base but according to what you posted about dialing 27.5 mils then that shouldn't be possible. I must be missing something lol.

sorry about that, I actually loose 5 mils on the bottom end. I know the scope is rated for 27 ish mils but mine seems to have about 32 mils end to end. Not sure why?

Did you have someone spotting for you? Seems like it would be pretty tough to spot a miss at 2700 yards on 13 power? Also why 13 power and not 11 power? Would have made the math a little easier.
Also what rangefinder did you use? Terrapin?

Yeah my spotter was watching through the camera lcd screen. I only saw a few splashes, most I couldn't see. 13x just worked out for that temp that day so I could use the reticle, I wanted all the power I could get, at 13x it was VERY small. I used a Garmin GPS unit to measure the distance. A terrapin would be nice though

Great video with good data. I am sure it took a ton of work. The honest reporting of 21 shots to get on is appreciated. The wind is the problem. At that distance it was probably going two or three directions at once. Even in hundred yard benchrest it is very common to have flags going is several directions. You and your friend did a really super job. I enjoy the fact that you did this with a basically off the shelf Savage. Keep the videos coming.

Hey Thanks Jerry, that means a lot. Your most correct about the wind, at about half way, 3 separate valleys come together and the winds collide from different directions making things difficult even with not so much wind. When there is wind, good luck, it's twister city out there.

on my ballistic solution, my 339LM with MV of approx 2740fps will trans sonic at around 1800 yards... how do you get to 2700 yards with about the same MV...?
You must be like at what altitude?

Going trans-sonic does not always mean total loss of stability. A well made bullet with the right spin rate in many cases will be able to transition from super-sonic to sub-sonic flight and continue in to impact the target. If the projectile has enough mass, and successfully makes it through the trans-sonic range, then it can still successfully complete the mission.

I'm guessing you are on the western slope from the looks of things? That's some nice shooting you were doing! I don't have anything in .338 Lapua yet (on the wish list), but I've been planning to find some empty tract of public land to stretch my .308 as far as I can in the mean time (I'm limited to just a touch over 800 yards at the place where I'm currently shooting, and watching videos like this definitely makes that feel like uninspiring "close range" shooting).
