I'm thinking about building a straight 284 win or possibly a 284 shehane for comp (f-class) shooting, which I'll utilise a 28" to 30" barrel for - but I'm also thinking of having a shorter (switch) barrel available for tactical-style shooting, possibly 20" - 24", which I'd wuss out on and fit with a brake.

Has anyone tried a 284 with a short barrel before? I'd be really interested in the results. Shorter barrel is clearly a trade-off with the bigger case but who knows - it might have merit..?

Looking at projectiles in the 160-180gr range

Cheers

Interesting - although I'd want to use a longer mag system in order to utilise the case capacity to the fullest, plus use the longer VLD projectiles.

Barrel on that rifle was 25". Wonder how a 20" would go?

I have thought about a 284 also (when I burn up the 308 barrel on my FN/Win) but I keep hearing short action limits the heavier bullets. If I have to go long action I'll stick with 6.5x55 or 30-06. Any opinions?

The 1086 looks like a great action to build on. Wonder if it will fit in an AICS stock?

Would still be interested to hear if someone has had any success with a short barrel configuration.
