30-08 Springfield case turned up in mixed brass

I ran across an odd duck while sorting boxes of old brass yesterday. I am stuck at work today, so photo yet. Case head is marked "PETERS 30-08 Sprngfld"

Looks like a .308 case with a longer neck. I threw it in the .308 pile twice before figuring out why it stood out. I did not take time for the calipers but set it aside.

Searching on internet it sounds like a chupacubarra. I found one reference to a rifle owned by TR that he thought was a 30-40 but a Remington reo replied in letter that it was a caliber "30 of 1908".

I just thought I would put out a feller here while I wait to get a photo.

Thanks,
Bill

I wonder if the case is an early made .30 Remington. It came out in 1906. Or you have a 30/06 case that had been reformed to another case.

I've never heard of a 30/08 Springfield, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Post up a good photo of the case head and the case when you get a chance, I'm curious also.

There was a 30/03 Springfield that was slightly re-designed in 1906 into the 30/06. The 30/03 has about a .040" longer neck than the 30/06. They made 30/03 ammo for a few years after the Army adopted the 30/06 because there were a number of sporting rifles that were chambered in 30/03.

Actually the .270 Winchester was designed around the 30/03 cartridge. The .270 win. has the longer neck of the 30/03. You might have a 30/03 cartridge.

Joke is on me!! Flight- you are dead on.

Last night I got time to clean it with baking soda and a toothbrush, looked at it under 10X- head stamp was 30-06 with a scratch strategically placed. I remember reading years ago that people would form short cases from longer cases and leave the necks long to seat heavy bullets further out for use in custom chamber--- that has to be what I have here. I will just toss it to make sure it never makes it to a standard .308 chamber.

Sorting boxes of mixed range brass sometimes bring out unusual things. 6.5X55 Norma cases, unfired 5.56mm blanks, .45 Basic brass. Closest thing I will ever come to a winning Lotto ticket!!

Sorry for the mislead.

Thanks,
Bill

It's funny what you find in old boxes of what people collected. I went though a box of misc. cartridges someone collected.

I found a loaded cartridge what looked like a German 7.92X 33 Kurtz. It was brass cased instead of the usually found steel case and it had a narrower extractor groove and it was dated 1942, which is early for a 7.92X33.

I took it to the San Francisco Gun Exchange to a friend who was an advanced cartridge collector. He looked at it and told me it was a quite rare experimental 7.92X33 round the Germans made during WWII when they were designing the Sturmgewehr.

My Gun Exchange friend said he had a friend who collected 7.92X33 and would like to have the round. I gave it to him and told him to give it a good home.

It was rescued from going into the trash. Every once in a while you do find a little gem.
