I'm about to rebarrel a remington 700 with a 31 inch heavy palma from brux. I'm just curious if I'll be able to get to a higher accuracy node with a 30 inch barrel when compared to the 26 and 28 inch barrel that everyone says shoot the best around 2950-3000fps range.

If you use RL26 you can get it but its not going to be consistant. Highest Node I have seen with 6.5x284 is 3080fps or so. Most guys switched back to H4350 or H4831SC and run 2950-3000fps. It's rock solid and predictable.

FWIW, I have burned through 13 barrels in this caliber over the last 17 years. I have just recently moved away from it, but if you done mind 800-1200 rounds per barrel it's awesome.

I may be way off but. If I do go with a 30 inch barrel and run it at 3000 fps the barrel life should be better than a 26 running at 3000 shouldn't it? Otherwise there wouldn't really be a point of running such a long barrel

Its been my experience that if you expect 3000fps from a 26" barrel safely and consistantly you're probably going to be disappointed. My first GAP rifle was 26" and tight bore and best I could get consistently was 2875. Remember, you can always cut it back. Try adding inches....

Yea I was planning on starting it out at 30 and cutting it back if I got tired of it. But now I'm curious about the deal with barrel life. If I have 2 barrels that I shoot at the same velocity, one being a short barrel ran as hot as possible and the other being a long barrel with fairly mild loads. Would the longer barrel have a noticeably longer barrel life.

My 26" went 850 rounds. My 30" go 1000-1100. Is that noticeable for you? Only you can answer. There are a lot of variables, steel, powder, rate of fire...

I shoot 1k highpower so I see exactly what my shots/barrel is doing. I know when I'm getting fliers, when I fuck up a wind call, etc.. I have instant down range feedback. If you are a PRS shooter, shoot 600y or in, etc you may get significantly more useable barrel life.

Used to be that a 30" 6.5-284 was running 2950-3050, thereabouts, with barrel life of 1000-1200 rds for an F-class gun, maybe a little more for a 'hunting' or field gun that doesn't typically get real hot shooting 20+ rd strings. Occasionally they went less.

That was when H4350 & H4831SC were the go-to powders, and the S142MK, B140VLD and JLK 140 VLDs were the bullets of choice.

Nowadays, with the expanded powder choices in that general burn range... might be able to get some more speed, but I don't know if the barrel life would be any better.

If you frequest Accurateahooter, look up posts form a member named shootsdots. Ben runs H1000 in his 6.5x284s and gets 1500+ rounds barr life. A couple of us tried it and went back to the old go-to but he has apparently figured it out. Could give you 50% more bare life it works for you.

Ill give it a look over there and see about it. But im.not really worried about the barrel life deal, since I rebarrel all my own guns and enjoy working on them just as much as I do shooting. Another thing is I'm from southern middle Tennessee and I haven't been able to find any sort of shooting competitions nearby so if any knows if any could you left me know about them.
