Hi all, I stuck my foot in it and volunteered to work up a load for a friends 30x 8mm mag. Any one with a starting load I'd be most appreciative. I haven't yet taken possession so I don't know all the particulars. It is built on a Ruger #1, has a 28" tube of unknown mfg. and twist. Thanks Steve

Re: 30 X 8mm Rem.mag

Thanks Exc. I don't have possession of rifle or dies yet, possibly late this week. I'm sure there are a couple of names for this chambering, I've heard it called a 30 Beanfield or some such close. It looks to be interesting anyway.

Other than the shoulder angle, that wildcat is the same as the 300Wby. What is the unknown is the chamber freebore. Most Weatherby's have a long freebore and the loads reflect that. If your chamber has a short freebore, you could get a pressure spike. If you use 300Wby starting loads, you should have not issues and even starting loads will fill the case quite a bit, so no fear of detonation.

Re: 30 X 8mm Rem.mag

Don't know if this will help, but my 8mmRM load for 200SMKs is 83.6gr of 7828. Doesn't matter if it's the SSC or not. It'll be interesting to see what load you develop esp. if using a similar weight bullet.

Re: 30 X 8mm Rem.mag

Again, thanks guys! I was pretty sure someone here had btdt. I will build a dummy to check length, then proceed off the Wby starting loads. I've got h4831, h1000, Retumbo,rl22,rl 25 on hand, I think that will get me started. S.

I believe Bruce Baer has as much experience as anyone with the 8mm/300...He calls his version the 308 Baer.
One of the more successful cartridges at Williamsport.

Give him a call. I have found him very helpful and a hell of a nice guy.

I suspect he will point you at H-1000

Re: 30 X 8mm Rem.mag

New to the forum and saw this post. Just finished up shooting my 30-8mm for the first time today. Worked up loads from 78gr-86gr of H-1000 with 168 gr.TTSX bullets. 86 gr. velocity was 3111, and is hot as I would take it. My Barrel is short at 22 inches , which is most likely why my velocities are lower then expected. Had to turn my case necks in order to reload for this gun. Tight tolerances. Weatherby Stock and action with Christensen Arms Carbon fiber barrel.

Re: 30 X 8mm Rem.mag

Well to put an end to this project I post;
I settled on 77gr. H4831, R-P brass, 215M primers,Berger 210 VLD's Coal 3.985
This is a very stable mid range load, Chrono'd 2920 fps. @45* with an es of 10.
I ran this up to 80 odd grains, saw 3100, and back pedaled. After all this is a hunting rifle suitable for women and kids.
On a side note,Thanks to Youngs Guns for putting a brake on this critter that makes it pleasant to shoot! I no longer have to wear my training bra ( Past pad ) when shooting off the bench.
