So I have a inkling to start playing with building a "Better" 300 RUM for myself. I currently have this Rem 300 ultra mag SPS with the X-Mark trigger and some time on my hands. Where should I start? Barrel, Stock, Trigger? I've never done this before so any info helps..

Re: 300 RUM

Mainly used for hunting in the short term. 3-400 long shots at muleys. Hoping for a Moose/ Caribou hunt in Alaska next year though. Budget is whatever I can squeeze out of the wife. I'm thinking $1-1500 + optics.

Re: 300 RUM

fro $1500 you can get plenty of custom work done you could start by putting it in a better stock and having it bedded and seeing how it shoots after. i have had that same rifle and could it to shoot sub moa just by putting it in a good stock and working up a quality reload. mine like 91 grains of RL-25 with a 180 grain accubond and a case length of 3.680" and i could get 3/4" groups consistantly. i would burn that barrel up and save money up in the mean time and then go for a full build just my $.02

Re: 300 RUM

+1 on the stock and bedding job.

The recoil from the Ultramags is not forgiving of action/stock flex. I have a sporting rifle in 300 UM and it would not do better than 1.5" @ 100 yds until I swapped the stock and bedded her in. Now she shoots 1/2" @ 100 yds.

Try the heavier bullets too. My rifle likes 180 grain and up. She really like the 200 grain Sierra Game King seated at 3.6"(that allows mag feeding and still gets me near the rifling because the Gameking's ogive is more pronounced than the Matchkings and VLD's).

Re: 300 RUM

For more of a hunting rifle, I like the Sendero format. I would definitely start with the stock, and if you are willing to go to a little bit heavier rifle, get a sendero / varmint contour barrel. I am not the biggest fan of the HS Precision stock, but would suggest maybe a Manners of McMillan. The Manners MCS-T makes a nice hunting stock. I will definitely agree with the above comments about bedding. I noticed a difference in my RUM with bedding also.

What's your load if you don't mind, I am waiting on mine to come from the smith in a couple of weeks.

Im loading 92 gr. of H1000 with a 185 VLD, using remington brass and CCI 250 magnum primers.

Sorry it took me so long to answer.

Re: 300 RUM

The H1000 powder is a bulky powder for a better case fill is what I was told.

I have some 208 A-max's on the way to try. I want to try some 210VLD's as well. But as the 185's go, they are freaking tac drivers out to 600 yards. I will give it a run out to 800 this weekend.

Re: 300 RUM

Ive been burning a good bit of Ramshot Magnum lately in the RUM with satisfying results. 96.0 gr. Rem Brass, CCI 250, 208 Amax 3.680 COAL. 3190 fps In a factory sendero. Previous load was 93 gr Retumbo, Rem brass, CCI 250, 208 Amax 3.680 getting 3050 fps. 1/2 moa.. Good luck

Re: 300 RUM

I also use Ramshot and dont see alot of guys that do. I just sold my 300 RUM sendero.. They shoot well, not really a cheap reloading caliber. You will go through some powder very fast. A very nice flexable load for me here in the mountains of az is the 178 A-max I really like that buller and it shoots extremely tight groups with my handload.
BTW Starke bullets in 125 grn will push over 4000 FPS up here, not sure what it will do down low. The starke bullet was the only one I could get to handle the twist and not explode just out of the end of the barrel..
That load was great for PD's and coyote.. Was very fun to shoot and the recoil on that load was next to mothing compared to the 178+ weights.

I am now looking to build a a new LR rig not sure what yet.

Pros wide bullet selection, great down range engery,

Cons barrel life was for me only 1800 rounds, recoil without brake is brutal, with a brake still very stout.

Cabelas, then I found a guy off here that had 85 primed for $55.00, Hell, I damned near paid that for 50 new pieces at cabelas. But if you look at midway or brownells, or powder valley. </div></div>

I don't buy brass from Midway, they buy in bulk containers and count out how many you want.... every piece of brass I have got from them has been shit.

Needless to say, cabelas, midway, and powder valley have all been backordered for months

.
Ref brass...i bought my last batch of "bagged" Remington at Cabelas. While prepping was disappointed had how many couldnt be used *dinged necks* I called Remington to let them know provided lot # etc. They sent me replacement brass. Good on Remington in my opinion! Wasn't to much of cabela's fault unless someone was using the bags as door stops. I know how things get handled when in transit from my days at the parcel. But as was posted Cabelas *if local* usually has some in stock.
.
As far as load goes:

200gr Accubond
94.7 Retumbo
Win LR Mag Primer
Rem Brass
Ave 5 shots: 3140FPS
.
I just ordered parts a little while back to get mine rebuilt. We'll see how it goes..good luck KEEP THE RUM ALIVE!
