300 Win vs 338 Lapua

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">338 Lapua is IMO a more superior round. If you can afford to buy or relaod 338LM I would definetly go with it. Its just so damn expensive!</div></div>
This is why I picked 338 Lapua Magnum as "the" long-reach caliber to go to. DTA provided a perfect platform that supported multiple calibers including 338LM.

Choosing the "main" stick for me was easy: SRS with both 308 for daily practice and 338LM as the best long-reach compromise.

In this thread I was trying to figure whether 300WM would <span style="text-decoration: underline">add</span> anything useful to my existing setup - I already have 338 and am <span style="text-decoration: underline">not</span> going to get rid of it or replace it with something else (same for 308).

It appears that 300WM would be cheaper to practice with than 338LM - but unless I can shoot at 1000+ yards there would be no training benefit over the good old 308, except for getting used to magnum recoil. But it would be a fun addition (though not very practical given the circumstances) - so I'll start saving money for a 300WM kit.

Thank you to everybody who contributed and shared his experience with these calibers!

Yeah,

That's pretty good logic. If I had a .308 and a .338, I'd have a really hard time justifying a 300WM. *ESPECIALLY* if the .308 was really a .260 Rem.

That's another caliber I'm contemplating to add. To the same SRS platform of course. Again - not easy to justify, as I'm trying to stick to calibers that could be used for hunting (even though currently I don't hunt

). But considering its superior exterior ballistics and the fact that all I need is a barrel and reloading dies - everything else is already there - I'll probably add it before 300WM.

OK I'm jealous. I really need to move somewhere else.

Thats my choice. I've shot it effectively to 2000 meters on the right day. I will never part with it.

That rock at about crotch distance from the rifle must have felt great to lay on. Oh, nice rifle.

I've shot both extensively...because I had to. Now that I'm retired I'm back to shooting a .308 and love it because I don't like to beat myself up anymore!

Ah, but imagine the nostalgic pleasure your shoulder would feel after a few 338's down the range, once or twice during the season!

Re: 300 Win vs 338 Lapua

Ok I realize I am bringing this thread back from the dead...(and jacking) but I have a question. I am debating the same decision. So would anyone's opinion change if one had access to free Lapua brass for reloading? This would cut down on cost as well. Thanks.
