Glad I found this thread. I have a 300 WSM with a 22" Proof CF en route. I have H4350 and RL16 available. Will be picking up Hornady brass unless Lapua becomes available soon.

I'd like to run 190gr Accubond LRs, but I cannot find a starting point for any of these combos. Am I looking at the wrong powders?

I worked up to pressure at 62.0 H4350, Norma brass, CCI 250’s, with 190 LRAB in a 24” Proof Carbon prefit. Backed off from there to my final load pushing them at 2880 fps. Seems to align closely with the 2209 data listed.

62.0 seems low for H4350 when Nosler calls for max loads of Hybrid 100v at 63.5 and Hunter at 65.0. H4350 burn rate is about smack in the middle of those 2. That speed though!

It was a gorgeous day today. Temps were 75 to 80 degrees. Mostly overcast. Cool breeze. So I took advantage of it.

300 Win Mag

Lapua brass
Berger 208 LRHT
Federal 215 primers (Blue box, not FGMM)
Winchester Sta Ball HD
CBTO: 2.620" (COAL 3.655ish)

Shot from 30" x 1:10 tube.

Gun seems to like this combo. Velocity started in low 2900's and the top end was mid 3000's. Wife has the chronograph info on her phone, so I can edit in the velocities later if anyone asks. No pressure signs at all.

Does anyone know what powder Hornady uses in their 300 Win Mag 200 ELDX Precision Hunter load? Or been able to replicate the same type of performance. This stuff shoots very well in my rifle, but would like to reload for it.

I had excellent accuracy with imr 7828 & high velocity Retumbo.
It’s a 26" factory barrel with Alum chassis with extra long mag box, so you can run 3.7" cartridges. The Retumbo load needs to be backed off about 1 grain...for my rifle.

I wanted the Remington 700 magnum action. It was $540 for a complete Rem 700 ADL 300 win mag 26" barrel on sale locally.
Before separating the barrel from the action let's see how accurate a $540 new Remington is, and what can be done to improve its performance.
Bought an aluminum chassis and threaded for a muzzle brake.
The Alum chassis allows for 3.715" mags or 3.850" mags
Not the 3.340" factory limitation.
Now one can add more powder to boost the power of the 300 Win Mag.
200 gr at 3200 fps with Retumbo, or 2962 fps for 230 gr SMK Alliant RL 50 from a new factory 700 ADL $540. Plus a $400 chassis and $90 brake.
The 300 Win Mag is still a great round.
But now its a .510 Whisper...
New bolt, new barrel....2 new match barrels .338 & .510...let the fun begin.

75.0gr N165, Norma brass, 215m primer.
Average velocity 2898 fps for seven shots. Es 52.6, sd 15.4.

First shot was slow, 2864 fps. Delete that one and es was 20.7.

Wasn't thrilled when the first shot broke and it wasn't where it should have been. 2,3,4 all in a ragged hole. Number 5 called bad. Had two rounds left, shots 6 and 7 fell in the center of the group.

Aside from the high es I'm happy with how it shoots. Tempted to back off the load .3 to .5 grains and see if that es/sd will come down. A couple of them clicked.

Almost had an uh oh. 3x fired hornady. Only using it because I wanted to play with some 155's. Usually run norma. 73gr of H4350, standard winLR. Velocity is right around 3300.

What is want to know is, what made this dent? Caught the case in my hand when extracted, so it never hit the ground. And it wasn't there before it was fired. Not that that ding could have survived the process anyway.

Best guess: The 300WM headspace is measured from the belt. Since it separated from the belt, even partially, the shoulder of the chamber became the new headspace. I'm guessing the dent is about 180 degrees off of where the brass didn't separate? Basically, the shoulder of the chamber caused the dent when the brass expanded unevenly into it.

This sounds spot on to me. I’m no expert, but I like reason. And this is a reasonable response.
What I will add is I stopped reloading horny 300WM brass after 2 firings for this reason. Other smaller cases, yes maybe 3-4. But not magnum cases. And yes I’ve heard all the chatter about people reloading them 10 times; I simply choose not to.

The "ding" in the case that never hit the ground...
It would happen after firing, because firing would just blow it out real nice & smooth like the rest of the case.
So it probably hit the side of the bolt recess on the way out during ejection.
Especially if ya yank the bolt hard and fast expecting to catch the case with your hand.

Weaker ejection springs are available, I have one one my 6 Dasher bolt, for those obvious reasons.

It's not really a problem if it hardly ever happens or this is the first time.
Just slow down on ejection speed, unless you're practicing for a timmed event or have a charging beast coming at you, as cases are expendable.

Been loading norma brass in 300winmag but I just picked up 100 pieces of Peterson long.

20 capacity on the fired norma is 95gr. Virgin Peterson is 89.4gr.

About how much should I back off my current load to start on the new brass? I was thinking 1gr.

I received 100pc of Peterson Long yesterday. My Mullerworks blank is at manzella. Just waiting on my TL3 to get it built. Will be chambered with the Navy A19 reamer used on the MK13's

I havent loaded 300win mag before so no experience with any other brass. Just grabbed 5000 Federal 215's and have 215gr Bergers.

Thought I'd back off 1gr from my normal load of N165 for this new Peterson brass. Last minute I decided on 2gr less. Glad I did. Was a little faster than I had expected and still got a slight ejector mark, and had a little clicker. Probably drop back to 72gr for the rest. As long as I'm hovering around 2900 I'm happy.

VV lists a max charge of N165 (in Lapua brass) for the Berger 208 at 75.2 gr... and for the Berger 220 LRHT, N165 max charge is at 71.6 gr.

So with Peterson brass (lower capacity than Lapua) you're probably right on the bleeding edge of your top end.

Just over 700 rounds on mine in about two years. Just joined a 1000 yard range, so it'll probably be seeing more action in the near future.

Win mag. I don’t chase speed so that improves barrel life a bit I’m at 2650 in summer on this load (18” barrel). I’m interested to see how long this will make it since I’m 700 rounds over the military expectation of a win mag but it’s shooting better than ever. 300 pieces of lapua with 8 firings on each

I'm curious as to your cleaning regimen also. I'm a firm believer in clean barrels last longer. Just something about grinding all the grit and hard carbon into the bore over 2-300 rounds that doesn't sound good to me.

Last I scoped my 300, I was surprised at how good the throat still looked, and how little firecracking there was.

its a very mild load - 64.5 h4350.

I clean every 200-300 rounds with boretech elimiantor and boretech brushes only.

I don't own a scope and never really wanted one - I shoot a lot and I really prefer to read the target rather than trying to decipher what a scope shows. Not hating on scopes just my own outlook
