300wm w/220 smk's

Re: 300wm w/220 smk's

Does the Sendero have sufficient twist rate to stabilize the 220 grain bullet? I shoot 190 SMK, or the 185 Laupa out of a 1-11 twist Obermeyer and it works fine. But I think I'm close to having too slow of a twist to stabilize the 220 grain bullets.

Re: 300wm w/220 smk's

My guess is you need a 10 twist min. My 5r 300wm is 10 twist, shoots 208amax great. Son has a 5r 308 11.25 twist rechambered to 300wm and shoots 190smk's great, not so good with 208amax.

Shoot the 208/210grn weight bullets. Better BCs and you can get them moving faster. Lots of load data in the 300WM data post in the Reloading Depot at the top of the main reloading section page.

FWIW....

The Navy's new load for the 300WM using the 220gr SMK, utilizes H1000 powder. It is loaded to get 2850 to 2950 fps velocity. The pressure spec is up there though. They state a max chamber pressure of 77,000 psi. I don't think they are worried about reusing the cases..
