308 case length for accuracy

Re: 308 case length for accuracy

Trim to is 2.005" and what I have always used. Some do castings of the chamber and figure out how long they can go but I have never felt the need.

Give it time; you'll get that 0.005 back eventually.

I wish Kevin Thomas were on this one but I think he is on the road.
Case length is not a big factor in accuracy, in my expirence and from what I have read.
Even from case to case. Just do not want them too long.
Get a chamber length gauge from Sinclair for about 5 bucks, make a holder from a throw away case and figure out how long your chamber is. Most That I have measured are far longer than SAAMI specs would indicate, and that includes from top end makers.
Then just keep them short of chamber length and uniform as you can. I would not worry at all about them being a bit short. I make .270 Win cases from Lapua 30-06 brass, uniform them up and they are very short. .040 or so. Work fine and no pre mature throat erosion at all. Just so I can use Lapua brass.

Don't know if I would make the statement that it's the "best" but it works just fine for me.

Re: 308 case length for accuracy

Any length that will fit in your chamber, allow for case growth, and hold the bullet is good. Having them even is important, especially if you are loading a round that requires crimping.

The shorter the case though, the more room for a carbon ring to form.

Re: 308 case length for accuracy

IMHO 2.005 is too short but works fine in 308 because its not an overbore, start necking it down to 260 or 243 and published min trim lengths aid in burning up chamber\throat, this is where the Sinclair Chmaber Length Gauge comes into play, I trim back to 2.030 on my 260, that is .010 from the end of the chamber.

Re: 308 case length for accuracy

From everything I have read the optimal case length is just anything under the size of your chamber! I think it's more important that your cases are fairly consistent with each other, rather than the actual measurement.

I recommend getting the cheap case length gauges from Sinclair... Many chambers are way larger than spec and your just wasting time trimming. My two chambers I measured are like .030 larger than spec!
