This is pulled from another post of mine:

A lot people boast the twist rate in the SPS-V are good, I was wondering if a few inches off would do anything from the standard 26". I have it on a B&C but haven't shot it a whole lot, I dont know the pro's and con's of shorting besides weight and length, and basic understanding of velocities. Donno if Im brave enough for the 20" and I dont really want to lessen my velocity for range purposes. But I dont want the weapon to be unwieldy with the break installed, its about 2 inches long. And what would be the additional cost to the brake job, as well?

Don't want the gunny yelling down my throat.

Re: 308 SPS-V Gunsmith question?

there are alot of 308 sporting shorter than 26" barrels no a days.
my sps-v in .223 is now right around 18.75" so i still get at least 16" of rifling..
nice looking rig!!
how do you like that B&C stock with the hook..

Re: 308 SPS-V Gunsmith question?

Does anyone know if the SPS Varmint barrel is the same diameter as the one that comes on the PSS?

I was looking at the Varmint yesterday, in 22/250 not .308 like I want, but was just curious if the .308 barreled Varmint model is pretty much the same as the PSS? Cause if the only difference is the stock then it would be better to get the cheaper Varmint model.

Re: 308 SPS-V Gunsmith question?

Its a BIG improvement over stock.....stock, Grip is bigger barrels free floated the hook in the back is kind of large for my taste. I dont use it as much due to the fact that Im mostly using a sand sock. It is alot wider but not overly. I wont lke I got it in about a month before I deployed in Feb, and cant wait to put more rounds thru it. The aluminum block fits great, I think once I start getting more range time Im going to skim bed it after a few attempts with lesser weapons in my stock pile. Did I mention for about 250-300 bucks its a great buy....

Re: 308 SPS-V Gunsmith question?

I've got the same SPSV in a B&C and I've decided to go from 26 to (probably) 24 when I get my break installed. The main reason? Because it's too damn big to fit in my case past 26 and it *just* fits in the back of my Audi.
Although I know it'll be fine, I'm skidish about cutting it because it shoots great and "if it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind.

actually planalpha, unless i am mistaken, its only $15 extra to cut and recrown when its in for the $85 threading. thats a good price. pictures look clean

Yeah Im kind of in the same boat, even though I drive a 09 Ram Quad Cab, lil more room than your Audi, but putting it in a case and just maneuvering the thing around to put in the gun safe is always a task.
