Yes they are indeed different, but not a problem. Troy Ehdlund of BarrelXchange has been converting .308 1919A4 Barrels to 7.62X39 with chamber inserts for several years now, and they shoot the slightly larger bullets without a hitch. Also for subsonic guns ALL the heavy bullets that would be available are going to be .308 diameter, and the 7.62X39 die sets all come with a .308 expander for reloading with the smaller diameter bullets. My Brownings love the 7.62X39 Russian/Yugo/Whatever, and supposedly all the Mini30 Rugers have always used .308 dia. barrels.
