Hey guys... I was wondering what charge you all are using with the IMR 4064 and 175 SMK's

I have been exclusively using RELOADER 15 at 43 grns... but due to the shortage... I came across IMR 4064 and going to give it a shot.

Let me know what you are using and how well it shoots.

My load was 42.4 grains loaded to approximately 2.285" and it was accurate at 100 yards with a 24" barrel. When I chorono'd it, the extreme spread was nearly 100 FPS. It was early in my handloading, so my experience was low and I may have been doing something to affect it and not know it, but that is a lot of variance for me. That kind of variance won't show much at 100, but will definitely show at longer ranges.
 
43 gr on my milspec 5r 24" bughole here n there on 100 pretty good. I hace not chronoed it tho.. but no preasure sign
 
I run 41.7gr in LC brass. Same load as the Mk 316 ammo. It shoots bug holes with a couple of my bolt guns and M1A.

43.3gr in LC13 brass, with Tula primers is a *touch* too much in a friends SSG3000, though it shoots beautifully there. Average MV is 2695fps, measured via magnetospeed.

42.5 4064 should be about the same as 43 RL15
 
42.7 grains topped off with a 178 BHP (moly) ai 2.813 COAL in Hornady brass gives me 2566 fps from a 18 inch AR-10T. It also gives me a woddy everytime I shoot these loads.
 
43.0 grains of IMR 4064 topped with a 175 SMK in LC LR brass shoots great out of my GAP Rock. Average velocity is 2713 fps out of a 22" barrel.
 
What's your stick?
I used WW brass and a 175 seated out to the lands of a factory R700 44.3 grains.
 
Great info. I'm using TAC now but it kinda bit me in the last match with high temperatures. I think the 4064 will be more stable.

Did an OCW and found a low node at 42.3 and a high node at 43.2.

I don't shoot 175 SMK any more, but have switched to 178gr Amax instead. Load data pretty much remained the same, though.

I found 2 nodes for my 20" barrel with Lapua brass. 42gr 4064 at 2.845" COL = 2500fps. Very accurate but not quite fast enough for 1000 yards. Found the next faster node at 43.8 grains = 2600fps. Just as accurate as the slower node.

42.2 grains 4064, LC LR 07 brass trimmed to 2.10, 175 nosler cc,Fiocchi LR primer, loaded to 2.810. This load shoots 1 hole at 100 and best 3 shot at 200 was under half inch shooting off bags. That's out of remington 700 sps tactical on a B&C medalist stock stock everything else..

I tried posting a completely new post with my setup, but for some reason it hasn't actually hit the boards yet. Here is the the load test we developed using 175gr SMK's, IMR 4064, once fired Hornady brass, and Remington primers. Shooting out of my Surgeon 591 SA with 22" Bartlein barrel 5R 1:11RH. All shot at 50yds.

and what we decided on was 43.1grains. Pretty sure I pulled the 42.5gr grouping.


We took it out to 800m and 1000m yesterday. Fairly pleased with the results.



Saw a 3" spread at 800m.


With a 4" spread at 1000m.

This is interesting, I'm trying to come up with a load for my Rem 700 SPS-V 26" and shot 41.8 IMR 4064, LC LR brass, CCI200 primer, 2.800 OAL and got an average 2547 FPS.

41.7gr of 4064 w/175 is about 2625fps and stays supersonic to 1000yards. In a FC case.

Shooting 41.7 IMR 4064, FC brass, F210M, 2.800 OAL my average of 5 was 2584 FPS with the same rifle.

Both using 175 SMK's and the temp was 58 degrees.

Davebl. What charge weight did you pick on your OCW test?

41.5 shoots pretty good, its a slow load though.

Truthfully, I abandoned the 175 SMK for this rifle and have been working on 178 Amax loads. I save the SMK for my bolt gun now.

As the powder charge increases, the point of impact decreases?

45.8 is hitting at what looks to be 1" lower than 41.5, that is some weird stuff that a load which is 4.3 grains hotter is impacting that much lower?

Those charge weights versus points of impact are the about the exact opposite of what I would expect to see.

Yep. I'm assuming that its due to barrel harmonics.
 
I don't want to hijack this thread but didn't feel like starting a new thread about the same powder and bullets. I did an OCW test using 41.4 to 43 grains of 4064 in .2 grain increments. I seems that my nodes are at 41.6 and 43+ grains since my group is getting closer together at 43 but I didn't test anything higher. However, I'm starting to see some pressure signs at 43 grains, with a slightly flattened primer and just slightly more force required on the bolt lift. I want to try 43.2 to see if my groups get any smaller. Do you think it safe to do so? Could I get more velocity without the pressure signs if I switch brass? I'm only using federal since I have a couple of hundred from shooting FGMM

I ve been over 44.2 with no issue, in my rifle with 175 smk and lapua brass. I will say this, find a node and explore seating depth, get a chamber gauge if you don't have one.

My IMR 4064 Load for .308 Win

I've been using the load below with my .308...24" Heavy Barrel...1/10 Twist...and getting .5 MOA to Sub .5 MOA Groups...all 3 rounds touching at 100 yards. I hit a 4" steel plate at 1000 yards using this load.

IMR 4064 - 42.8gr
Once Shot, Fire-Formed, but Re-Neck Sized Brass, OAL - 2.010 (Remington Premier Gold Match Brass)
CCI Large Rifle Primers #200
Berger Long Range Target BT 175gr BC: G1 - .515, G7 - .264
COAL - 2.840
Muzzle Velocity - Avg. 2,675 fps

42.2 IMR 4064 under a 175 SMK w/ Lapua brass is my go to for 1K shooting. Mil Spec M-24 w/ Rock barrel.
 
Lapua brass, 175 SMK, 42.2 grains IMR 4064. Seating depth is 2.795. Primer is Fed 210m.

LC LR brass, 175 SMK, 41.0 grains IMR 4064. Seating depth is 2.795. Primer is Fed 210m.

These are my standard loads. I have more than one 7.62x51 rifle, they all shoot this ammo.

The LR cases are about 5 grains heavier than the Lapuas. With the charges above, they shoot into the same holes. I sort cases by weight; all the cases in a box of ammo are: Maximum weight - minimum weight = 1.0 grain or less.

The attached photo is a 6-inch plate shot at 500 meters from a bipod and rear bag. I fired 15 times and hit it 11 times - I am kind of new to this whole bipod thing.

Has anyone in here ever pulled one of these factory cartridges and weighed powder? I did two of same lot (# P21N553) and recorded 43.74 to 43.76 (my scale runs by 0.02 grain).

shot these 2 steels yesterday, prone 600 yds, bipod, rearbag...this load also shoots ragged holes @ 100...i was too lazy to do load work up so i just copied the load data from the data sheet Dan Newberry posted and took it out and shot it.

Man, just the opposite here, I just picked up an 8# IMR4064 because I can't find RELOADER 15. I think they should be close though.

Davebl, could it have something to do with the fact that the bullet crosses the scope line of sight twice? If you are zeroed at 100 and the bullet path is coming up to POA from below, and you increase the velocity, could it impact lower? I usually do load dev at 380 so the bullet is falling...higher velocities mean higher POI, but at 100 it would be pre-apex right? does that matter?
