VSP had a great idea to put this up as a Sticky.
Since we get SO many questions about this, this will aid everyone( esp Noobs) on a good load.

Please list ALL components, twist, barrel mfgr, length, neck tension.
Since we know changing any variable will alter the ultimate outcome.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

With stock Win. brass i run 44.5 RL 15 175SMK it gives me 2750fps.with Modified Brass and 47+ i get over 2900 out of 175s but accuracy suck. This is with a progresive twist shallow riffling bbl and a Bat action.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

On A Factory 700P I ran 45.7 RE15 to get 175SMK to 2740 before presure signs. This was with Win Brass and FGMM primers. Minimal ES and SD. Stock 26" barrel.
- I am doing a friends load development Saturday on another 700P and will see if this one is is close to the other load as well.

On my custom action (BAT dual port multi-facet) I need as little as 43.0 RE15 to get to 2750 with Win Brass and FGMM primers. 28" Bartlien Gain Twist HV 1:12 4 groove

on an AR-10T the most accurate load to match a MK4 M3 BDC was RE15 44.2 @ 2618fps with 175 SMK. I'm using that scope for another project soon and will step down on the gas to get a faster load for this rifle. This load will give you ejection port dings on the brass if you don't trim the buffer spring length. If you trim it there may be an issue with your lock time and may need the load re-tweaked. Stock 24" Lothar Walther - can't remember the twist...1:11.24? Somebody help me on twist and grove please so I don't have to look it up.

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Thanks guy's, don't forget barrel length..........Danka.
700P is obvious to most, but not all.(((((((((;

Re: Loads For .308 Winchester

Load developed for my LTR. 20" Barrel

Lapua brass half neck sized using a .338" bushing
45.1 grains of Varget
168 Sierra Match King bullet
Bullet length is set to 2.3125" measured to the Ogive (this is copied from FGMM)
I use this kit to properly measure bullet seating depth: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=231904

Edit: This usually produces .25 to .5 MOA results in my LTR and flies around 2630 fps.

I have another load that uses these same specs except for 43.5 grains of Varget and a 178 grain A-Max. This load tends to be more accurate than the 168 SMK load. Velocities are about 2500 fps from my 20" LTR. Not only does this load usually shoot better at 100 yards it tends to me much more consistent out to 800 and beyond than the SMK load.

Currently I use the redding competition die set but I plan on adding the Lyman M die and the redding crimp die operations to develop a load that will work similarly with other brands of brass than just Lapua.

I load 45.5grs RE15 with Rem brass and primers(9.5) using Hornady SST or Sierra SBT bullets. Only shot the Sierra bullets in my rifle but loaded the SSTs for a buddy, he just shot them the other day, he reported they were very, very accurate. Just the other week I compared Varget and RE15 using 42grs each with 168MKs, same components as above, while groups at 200yds werent too impressive,(6X scope) the 100yd group with the RE15 went 9/16th" for 3 shots, 2 literally in the same hole, out of my stock Remington barrel. Varget didnt fair as well, so much for Layne Simpsons "great" 308 loads per Rifleshooter mag issue. Oh, I use Hornady dies, dont have the foggiest what the neck tension is, havent got that anal yet, bullet is seated .040" off the lands. Stock Rem. stainless sporter barrel, 10 twist, 24".

Well fellas I've been loading up 165 grn Hornady SST's for my 20"LTR Here's the results with Varget. I've tried completely up and down the scale and here is what I've gotten with Varget alone that is the best..

BRASS:Winchester
BULLETS:165grn Hornady SST's
POWDER: 44.2 Varget
PRIMERS:CCI Large Rifle
OAL:2.8"

Results: The best group with the spectrum of varget weights was 44.2grns of Varget which gave me an average five shot group of .8" of and inch at 100 yards.

The second best group with powder ratio was with 44.4 grns of varget giving me .9" of an inch at 100yards.

From these points it didnt matter what I did with the powder charges, the groups just opened up either way I went. I will update on other powders soon to come.
