I just had Jon Beanland build me a 30BR in a benchrest rig and man let me tell you this is the single most accurate rifle i have ever owned. I personally think there is a place for a 30BR tactical rig.
Now this this being said, I feel like the 30BR is only valuable out to 500 yards, maybe 600. The studies show that most all shot are taken withing 100-200 yards. If this is in fact the case then this chambering can not be beat. I think this hole idea is more inclined to police type work rather than military. I really dont know were i am going with this but i just wanted you folks to no and think about this chambering net time your building a rifle intended for closer range work. The 30BR needs a slow twist barrel and it will shoot up to 125gr bullets. Not very heavy for a 30 cal but the accuracy of this chambering is whats so special. The 30BR will push a 125gr bullet at 3100fps with H-4198. I think the charge weight is around 35gr. Way more efficient than a 308. You can read all about this cartridge on 6mmbr.com. there is a small section aimed towards tactical use for the 30BR. I am really taken by the accuracy and the easiness of loading for this cartridge. I dont know how it will feed from a magazine, but like the 6br it can be made to work. This is a great chambering that needs more consideration. Lee

Re: 30BR for tactical use

most true tactical shooters are bound to shoot factory ammunition for legal reasons and this alone would prevent the 30br from ever gaining acceptance in that arena. i agree on the accuracy potential but if not a 308 why not a ppc, 6.5x47 lapua, or any number of other ultra accurate cartridges?

Re: 30BR for tactical use

That is correct , I don't know of any LE agencies that are allowed to shoot hand loads , maybe FBI or Seceret Service. True also that most ploice sniper's shots are under 100yds , generaly accross a city street or parking lot.

I can shoot 5 shot groups into a quarter all day from most supported field positions at 100yds and inside that with factory ammo. How much more accurate do you need to be? 99% of the time theirs only gonna be one shot anyway. Also a 168 or 175gr SMK at 2600-ish FPS is going to do ALOT better job at getting through auto glass or double pained windows that a 125gr would if that problem presented itself.

The 30 BR is an amazing accutate and consistant round though I will say that this is why its been so popular in score shooting and BR at the shorter ranges and the barrel life would probably be in the 8000-10,000 range for a sniper rifle also

Re: 30BR for tactical use

Good points made here!! I was just really taken by its extreme accuracy. It beats anything i have ever seen. I can cover 5 shot groups with a dime, and keep in mind i am talking 30cal holes. Its simply amazing, It truly is!! Lee

Re: 30BR for tactical use

I agree that there are rounds out there such as the 30br that can achieve better accuracy than the .308 but as others have said, hand loads are a definate no no for Law Enforcement use. So many things come into play after a police shooting, I would hate to have to add my handloading into the mix for an attorney to pick apart in a civil suit which almost always happens after a police shooting. There are so many different factory loads that LEO's can use for the .308. Recently at a firearms instructor's course we did some demonstrations using milk jugs to see how far different rounds would penetrate. The Hornady 110gr tap only penetrated 2 jugs filled with water. The 168 and 175 FGMM penetrated 5 and the Federal 165gr tactical load blew through all 7 jugs. The accuracy standard for police sniper rifles has been said to be 1MOA. I don't agree with that, I think it should be closer to 1/2 but my point is, there are several factory loads that will achieve 1moa or better accuracy and a wide range available for different levels of penetration needed.
