I've done some research, but I can't find straight up answers

1. Which one performs better at long range shooting (1000+ yards)?

2. Which round has more muzzle energy?

3. Which one has better penetration on hard metal objects/thick skinned game?

Let me google that for you

Lots of info here at all the links this turns up. Im not sure why you are having trouble finding answer to the first 2 questions. the third is almost moot because they both shoot the exact same .338 bullets at similar but slightly different velocities so penetration would be nearly the same if both shot the same bullet at the same velocity.

My issue would be that the 340 wby brass is belted and that causes all sorts of problems in reloading, headspacing, accuracy etc. That along would be the deciding factor for me

They are close on paper but only if you get the high pressure weather by ammo. And you'd have to deal with all that freebore. The lapua has the ballistic advantage all the way around. If you want more power than the lapua (not sure why) look at the 338-378 weatherby. But again if you want a big 338 lapua is the practical choice.
