338 Lapua.

Re: 338 Lapua.

300gr Lapua Scenar might, just might stabilize from 1/12".
A guy here who got box of new boolets from "0-Lot", shooted them with stock TRG-41. He was very pleased with accuracy, all test groups under 0.5MOA, test range 300m. He told about hes tests in local forum.

What comes to trajectory, 250gr Scenar flies flatter 300gr SMK or even new 300gr Scenars at 1200meters mark, and is still predictable after going subsonic. Alltough 250can be pushed lot faster that 2970- thats how compare was made. 300gr velocity 2822.

Re: 338 Lapua.

i just finished up testing loads for a friends 338lm. its a 26" bartlein with a one in 10 twist. it shot both the 300 gr smk and the 250 scenar very well. we used h1000. working up to 93 grs for the 300 and 100 grs for the 250. in the end we chose the 250 scenar for its flatter trajectory. this was my first go with the 338lm and ill tell you its a very impressive round! the power and precision out to 1600 meters was awesome! I cant wait to get mine.

Re: 338 Lapua.

I've been using US869 in 50BMG and 338LM since the powder was introduced. With a 300SMK 100gr. H US869 Fed 215M, Lapua case I've been around 2775 through a 30"1/9.43 Mike Rock tube. Through a 27in. 1/10" Schneider tube my 300 yard zero is .1 milrad lower than my load of 87gr. of RL25.(no chrono numbers available)

The barrel doesn't seem to get as hot. But as of last week shooting in low 90F temps this load was exhibiting some pressure signs. My RL25 did not.

US869 meters great in all my measure too.The max load listed by Hodgdon is 108grains. This load is too hot in my tight GAP match chambers.

This powder does NOT have the velocity potential that RL25 has in the 338LM, IMO, from my experience. I have fired over 1000 rounds of 338LM with Hodgdon US869.At 300 to 1000 yards the RL25 load is more consistent.

I've used 16 pounds of US 869 in the 338LM and 50BMG. I'm switching back to Hodgdon H50BMG for the 50 and RL25 for the 388LM.

Your mileage may vary.....

Re: 338 Lapua.

Don't try this at home but with 91 grains of REL 25 under a 300 SMK, I got 3050 fps out of a 26" tube and accuracy was great, of course you have to use a malet to open the bolt but even at 86 grains I get around 2750 fps under the 300 SMK's with no pressure signs.

WOW, my max load is 89 grains of RL25 with the 300SMK. If all my shooting was at 1000+ yards, that would be my go to load. 87grains give me .5moa consistently @300. 91 grains of RL25 gives the 250Scenar a good push too.

Re: 338 Lapua.

The 91 grain load was shot mid-summer 90+ deg outside. The 86 grain load I shoot year round in every 338LM I own without any problems, if I go above 86 grains I start getting sticky bolts when so I keep it at 86. I have been very happy with REL 25, I have several cannisters of H1000 for sale if anyone wants it I'll let it go at a discount.

Dogtown,
Production has been going for several weeks now and we are adding a second shift to catch things back up. We would have been ahead of schedule but we had to upgrade the power at our building and the power company made us wait for 2 1/2 months before they did the upgrade.

We made several enhancements to the rifle systems to make them a lot nicer than the prototype weapons that were displayed at the shot show.

Re: 338 Lapua.

okay, 300gr bullet looks good !

but personally I use 250gr bullets in my SAKO and I think to stay devoted to them until I can get 275gr or 280gr bullets from Berger or Sierra. I don't understand why Sierra, Berger, Hornady don't produce a 338 HPBT in this weight range it would have the best ratio... I have heard rumor from berger but no news ?

Re: 338 Lapua.

300 gr SMK's or 300gr Scenars need at least 1-10 twist at 1-11 they will go unstable shortly after 1000m. I have shot them out of 9, a 9.35, and 10 twist they all shoot well with the faster twists doing a little better at 1500m

Re: 338 Lapua.

Stacey Blankenship said that AI is making the new barrels with 1:9.5" and 1:10" twist. They will be just drop in with the kit to change the barrel. Just don't know when they will be released. Hoping that they will be available before I burn through my current barrel.

Re: 338 Lapua.

The benefit to the 300's are much better wind resistence. Since Elevation is relatively predictable and wind isn't as much so, the 300's help to minimize the effects of the less predictable component to long range shooting.

Kind of FPS were you getting on the 300g's?

Rem 700 338LM, Hornady brass, 300 grain Scenar.

Following was recorded using Pro Chron, 42-45deg F. 800 ft asl.
No obvious signs of over pressure, but I need to look carefully, so caveat emptor on this data...

These http://www.dynamicresearchllc.com/3lorahul.html

They also have some 235 gr solids with a BC of .82, supposed to be pretty damn fast and flat. I suspect these would give 300 grainers a run for their money in the wind. Thoughts?...</div></div>

There a awesome option for those who want to run a short barrel 338 and they are very accurate. To boot the man who ownes this company is a man of great integrity.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: DJ338Lapua</div><div class="ubbcode-body">You all need to try H US 869! Lower pressure, more gradual pressure curve, and higher velocity, safely than any other powder. </div></div>
I will lead off by saying that I am currently having accuracy problems with my 110BA in 338LP, so it may be a factor. But US869 has been the worst yet for accuracy, by a LOOOOONG shot. I mean, my best groups with any powder load has been about 2MOA, but the best I've been able to get with us869 is like 4.5-5MOA!
I'm not saying us869 is a bad powder because it seams I am the only one having problems with it, but I think a longer barrel is in order to keep the consistency of the US869 up jdue to its extra slow burn rate.
FWIW, the 110BA only has a 26.5" barrel...

Re: 338 Lapua.

I have had great results with both H1000 and N170 with the 300g Lapua Scenars. I have shot lots of the 250g Lock Base and Scenars, but loaded only a few hundred.

I have had higher velocity and good accuracy with Re25, but the variations in velocity as the temperature changes make it not a candidate for me.

Great accuracy and a very stable/predictable trajectory curve are my requirements and H1000 and N170 work the best for me.

Re: 338 Lapua.

can anyone tell me what would be a good 300gn hunting or military projectile for the 338LM as i am currently using 250gn scenars which are good for paper and very accurate but i wish to test some 300gn and due to the cost of this round i would like to use just one load for paper and in the field. i would appreciate any advice as the info is a little hard to come by here in OZ

Re: 338 Lapua.

there is only 2 readily available bullets here in OZ in 338cal 300gr...

The 300gr sierra match king, and the 300gr lapua scenar... both perform very similar ballistically BC ~.76 give or take , but the terminal performance of the sierra match king is suitable for hunting whereas the lapua scenar tends to just pencil thru game without expanding. Youll need a 10 twist barrel to shoot the 300gr bullets tho, alot of the TRG-42 guys only shoot the 250grainers because they have the factory 12 twist barrel - which wont stabilize the 300gr properly...

Re: 338 Lapua.

thanks for the reply groper, i have a 1 in 10 twist in the blaser tac 2, which is the main reason i wish to test 300gn pills. You say readily available here in OZ do you know of any better pills we can get from overseas which 'outperform' these two? as i may be able to find a way to get them shipped out here. if these are the best available i most probably will go with the scenar. cheers.

Re: 338 Lapua.

I have a 1-11 and 1-9.7 The 11 twist is great for 250 but the 9.7 will eat anything. To be honest I havent really seen a diffrence between the 250 Scenar and the 300 SMK. FWIW
