Works very well for 338LM. Lots of leverage.

I recommend using the Redding Type-S or Comp die sets. Both allow you control over neck tension via the bushings.

Does anyone know if the rcbs turret press will work for loading the Lapua, Rcbs has not e-mailed me back concerning this.

Norma is actually about 10-12grs heavier, if you can believe that, but my advice would be to get Lapua and get a couple/few boxes, as the price is skyrocketing. Norma works fine too and if it's a lot cheaper try some, but Lapua IME is lasting pretty long for a large cartridge case.

Chris </div></div>almost the same thing with mine but it was 14 on the norma and still going at 21 on the lapua... yes 21 on the lapua don't stress the brass and anneal it when you can.

Speaking of brass, anyone have any thoughts on the Hornady 338LM brass?

Re: Loads for .338LM

Here is the load I am using for an AI AWSM in .338 LM. I am using Lapua brass, Lapua 250gr Scenar bullets, Federal 215 primers, and 90.0 grains of H4831sc. The OAL is 3.63". I am getting 2940 fps with an SD of 7.0.

Re: Loads for .338LM

I just got a TRG-42 and will start loading .338 LM soon. I have a quick question - when determining seating depth, what jump to the rifling are you using, or are you simply using the standard OAL listed in the manuals, or are you setting OAL based on the magazine length. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi 2923
Lo 2912

Probably not a first choice for powder selection, but I tried it because I use it in 7wsm. It actually works nicely in the 338LM, so thought I would share it.

Re: Loads for .338LM

Anybody have any loads worked up for the 338LM with the 300gr Scencars? I shot the 250's in my AR-30 but I would like to try the 300's in my TRG-42. AR was 1-12 TRG is 1-10. I have been hearing good things about MagPro powder so I picked up some of that to try. Anybody seeing better accuracy 300SMK versus 300 Scencar? I believe the Scencars have a better BC? Thanks!

A new alternative that is holding up well is .338LM brass from Jamison International. Their work on .408 brass has paid off and they are now producing excellent .338 brass.

You are going to be limited by the magazine length. The newer model has a longer OAL, but the one that I have (2 years ago) was about 3.640". The chamber length is going to be longer than that.

Re: Loads for .338LM

<TAG> Just getting ready (finally) to reload for the .338 LM. Great information on this thread - looking forward to coming back for data as soon as I'm all set up.

Re: Loads for .338LM

Im starting to reload for my AWSM in 338LM. I have a RCBS Rock Chunker press but need help with the best die set and shell holder. Which are the best.

Re: Loads for .338LM

I'm familiar with Forester and Redding mostly and they both make good stuff in my opinion. I have several sets of Redding competition dies including 338 LM and I like the interchangable sizing bushing and especially the micrometer seating dies. Any of the well known manufacturers should be fine for a shell holder, RCBS, Redding etc., I don't know off hand what number the 338 takes. I've been using a Bonanza Co-Ax press with a automatic shell holder.

RCBS dies and holder work fine for me. The mic-dies are cool but don't rise to the level of need for my goals in reloading.

Merry Christmas!

Re: Loads for .338LM

300 GR. Scenar
91 gr Retumbo
Fed 215M
3.681 OAL
2750 FPS @ Sea Level

This load has produced 1/2 MOA groups out to 600, which is as far as I have had the opportunity to test. Rifle is a TRG.

Re: Loads for .338LM

I had a couple hundred pc of Hornady once fired that I worked over and loaded for hunting rounds. No issue what so ever with it that I could see. Seemed a bit softer maybe, but worked great for what I am using it for. I have fired probably 75 or 80 rounds of it, and no signs of a problem after the second firing.

I first got the RCBS #37 shellholder (416Rigby) it did not work until I Dremelled it out, but the RCBS #14 works oerfectly.

This is with Lapua brass.[/quote] I just found this out today too. The die fit with my hornady brass but not the lapua brass I just picked up.

Re: Loads for .338LM

Does anyone have loads for 250gr and 300gr SMK's using RL-25?

Re: Loads for .338LM

Thought I'd throw my load out there...Rifle is a TRG-42 10 twist.

Lapua Brass
300 GR Scenar
Fed 215M
91.9 GR VV570
3.680 OAL

Under .5 @ 100 yards out of my gun so far. Gonna Chrono and group at 300 next week.

I tried 84grs of RL-25 w/ 300SMK and wasn't too impressed. Gonna try again in about 30mins. Retumbo works very well.

I was at my local range which is only 100 meters, my usual shooting spot is 850 meters. I fired 10 rounds total into a steel plate and it was a triangle blown out of the plate at around 1".

Re: Loads for .338LM

with a 1-10 twist barrel which SMK is better the 250 or 300 gr.. Or are they equal?

Re: Loads for .338LM

If you run the numbers, here's what you get:

250 SMK at 2900 (decent velocity, but can be pushed faster)
300 SMK at 2650 (decent velocity, but can be pushed faster)

250 SMK
Range Velocity Energy Elev Wind Time
(yards) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs) (moa) (moa) (sec)
0 2900 4668.3 --- --- 0
500 2156.1 2580.4 -8.69 2.8 0.6
1000 1541.9 1319.7 -27.11 6.56 1.425
1500 1122 698.8 -57.41 11.53 2.58

300 SMK
Range Velocity Energy Elev Wind Time
(yards) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs) (moa) (moa) (sec)
0 2650 4677.7 --- --- 0
500 2101.7 2942.2 -10.05 2.35 0.636
1000 1627.6 1764.5 -29.13 5.31 1.448
1500 1255.9 1050.6 -56.89 9.02 2.503
1800 1104.2 812.2 -79.42 11.52 3.271

Basically, the 300 has less wind drift than the 250. But the 250 is flatter out to about 1200 yards. The energy the 300 grain retains is also pretty high. These are in MOA.

Re: Loads for .338LM

Anybody using IMR4350 behind the 250gr or 300gr SMKs for the 338LM with any luck. I can't find any of the H4831SC around my area but can get the IMR4350.

Thanks Kevin.

Re: Loads for .338LM

most of this info is bout TRG's anyone have any load info for me to start with to narrow down developemnt for my Rem 700 338LM MLR?
Thanks!

Re: Loads for .338LM

I push 300g. SMK with 73.0 grains of IMR-4350, which is the accuracy load listed in the Sierra manual, from my AR-30. I haven't chronoed this load, but I typically get .5 to .75 MOA from a 5 shot group at 200 yards. I plan on ordering a keg of Retumbo to see how it performs.

Which Sierra Manual do you have? Mine (Edition V, Fourth Printing) says the accuracy load is 78.2grains of IMR-4350 for the 300.

I've shot this load out to 950 yards at steel with good result; but, I haven't done any chrono work or groups at this distance yet.

Re: Loads for .338LM (Ramshot Magnum?)

Does anybody here use Ramshot Magnum powder with SMK 250gr bullets for 338 LM?

If so - what's your data and experience (how clean does it burn, how accurate the load is, etc)?

Re: Loads for .338LM

What is the standard OAL of 338 and 50BMG? I'm going to get started loading these and need to know. also i need load data for 690gr FMJs on the 50.

for my 338 load i was looking at

250gr SMK
CCI LRM primer
83gr of IMR 4831

Re: Loads for .338LM

RJ_Hunter, thanks! Great to hear! Please keep posting your updates - including bullet type & weight, powder charge, velocity, accuracy (how well does it group), and how much residue it leaves compared to other powders.

I'll be reloading for Sierra MatchKing 250mg, and will share my experience here too.

My question is what is the technical difference between standard and magnum primers?

anyone using the alliant 4000mr powder yet my buddy has tried it in his 300 rum with great results. also what is a good start to hold off the lands

Re: Loads for .338LM

Some of our .338 loads....
26" 1:10 barrel in Desert Tactical SRS
250gr SMK
97gr IMR 5010
Fed 215
Lapua cases
2850 fps
75 Deg F

250gr SMK
94gr Retumbo
Fed 215
Lapua case
2820 fps
75 deg F

250gr SMK
94gr Retumbo
Fed 215
Privi Partizan case
2930 fps
75 Deg F

250gr SMK
94gr Retumbo
Fed 215
Hornady case
2770 fps
75deg F

The privi cases seem to have a much thicker case head and lower powder capacity. Velocity is way up though there are no signs of excessive pressure visible. We've had some cases loaded 4 and 5 times with no cracking or rings at the front of the web.
All the different brass seems to work ok and while the Lapua is the most consistant the other two seem to hold pretty good groups. We haven't cracked any necks yet after 5 loadings on all types.
I've started working up a load for the 300gr SMK's using WC 860 and WC 872 both of which are pretty slow being used for .50 cal and 20mm vulcan. So far the 872 is looking pretty good at 92gr and 2400 fps at 84 deg F. There is still some room in the case and no signs of pressure yet. We tried 100gr of US869 which is supposed to be great for the heavies but that load gave 2550fps with the 300 SMK and flattened the primers a bit. The bolt handle wasn't tight or anything like that but I think thats about it for the US869. Not any room left either.
