I would like to by some steel. I already have some 3/8" AR500 steel that i shoot my 308s with at 200+ yards and they show no ill effect. Can i use my 50BMG on same 3/8" steel if shot at 400yards or more or do i need to 1/2" AR500?

If its on chains and if you don't mind if it starts to cup it. Also no ap stuff. For 400 meters and closer I'd apt for 5/8 or thicker ar500.

I built some targets out of 3/8" AR 500. 50BMG has no more effect on them than .308, aside from knocking them down. Velocity is what kills targets, not energy.

To prove it, we took a 6" diameter round target and placed it against some rocks so it couldn't move. We then shot it at 100 yards. Not even a dent.

From my experience the .50BMG will bend the 3/8
inside 1000 yards. I would get 5/8" inside 900 yards. 1/2" would be fine for 800 to 900 yards and further.

After seeing the other posts, I started to doubt my own story. I checked the target I shot, and it does have a very slight dent. More importantly, I checked with the owner of the 50 and discovered that the MV on those rounds was only 2250fps with a 750g bullet. Evidently, that's the most accurate loading for his rifle, but it's roughly 500 fps slow. Sorry if I misled you.
