Can GI 5.56 mags be modified to feed the Grendel? I dunno if you guys feel the same way, but these thin steel mags look too damn flimsy. I like the heft of the 5.56 mags and would rather use them.

Re: 6.5 Grendel Mag?

The feedlips and geometry at the front of the mag is where you will likely have problems. Cproducts are the only options right now. I've seen a recent post about a new mag coming out, but don't have any other details as to manufacturer or timeframe.

Re: 6.5 Grendel Mag?

When comparing my mags I found the feed lips on my GI surplus type mags to stick out quite a bit more than the ones on my C-products grendel mags. I can load the grendel ammo in the 5.56 mags just fine though.

Comparing C-products 5.56 mags to the grendel mags there is basically no dicernable difference between the two except for the follower. The feedlips are ever so slightly larger on the 5.56 mags but I don't think it would affect operation.

I have not, as of yet, tried to use my 5.56 mags to feed my grendel. I just got my grendel upper a few weeks ago and have been either too busy or its been below zero, to go try it out. However, I don't see any reason that it wouldn't work.

I just tore a couple mags apart to try it out. Short answer is yes. If you can get the GI follower out you can get the grendel follower in. I accidently broke the floorplate retaining tab off while I was getting the GI follower out so that may have made it easier too.

FYI the springs are a bit different where they hook into the followers. The c-products mags have a lot larger tab on them being plasic. So if you're reusing springs from the GI mag you're gonna have to do a little tweeking on the spring to get it all to go together.
