Hello everyone!

I am doing my first bolt gun build and really looking forward to taking the Mile High Shooting 3 day LR class and then getting into PRS matches. I also have an interest to trying to stretch the legs on my build and hopefully after a lot of practice and experience, this build might get me out to a mile... But I am new to this and dont really know. Any advice is appreciated! I use to shoot bench rest and silhouettes with my grandfather but those days are dwindling as he gets older, so I am looking to get into something new.

My build:
Remington 700 action that is blue printed
Jewell Trigger
KRG Bravo Chassis (skim bedding)
Krieger 24" (does anybody have any advice for load and barrel twist?)
Badger Ordnance 20moa rail
Griffin Armament SPRM 0 MOA scope mount
Vortex Viper PST 6-24 Gen II

I feel this would be a great platform to learn and grow with. The gunsmith will be getting my action soon, but i want to determine what barrel I want exactly before I hand it all over. Really excited to get this underway!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I would definitely shoot it before bedding it.

Depending on the price of the PST, there are a lot of newer options. That might be better for the money spent, if you are spending there and don't already own it. .

If the action has already been trued, that option may be a no go. You will get a loose fit [unsafe] with the threads on the barrel, if the the threads in the action have been opened up.

Not sure why you're specifying a first-gen Viper. If you already have it, run it and enjoy. If you haven't yet made the purchase, there are likely better options. Is Vortex the brand/reticle you prefer? If so, Call (on the phone) Scott at Liberty Optics. If you're brand-agnostic, Call (on the phone) Doug at CameralandNY. Both are SH supporters and look after us well.

Good luck. Enjoy the ride.

If you will be using it for PRS I would advise against the Jewell trigger. They can fail in dirty conditions. Something like a Timney, Trigger Tech etc would be better.

For the barrel, a 7.5-8 twist would work fine. I have run all 8 twist as I don't shoot over a 147 ELD in mine. For length I would stretch it some to 26-28" and put a good brake on it. As for contour it would depend on what you want for weight. Anything from med palma to MTU are used by people. A good middle road is the M24/40 contour.

Do you have the scope and mount already?

I already have the scope, but I have not yet purchased the mount. Thanks for the pointers, I will get an 8 twist and get the barrel longer. What if a guy had plans to eventually get a suppressor for it? Would that change an opinion on barrel length?

I would skip the bedding of the KRG Bravo. Shouldn't be necessary.

This is something I am debating. I have heard a lot of people saying its not necessary, but a few gunsmiths I have talked to say it is not always required but they have never seen it hurt anything! I will also be doing the bedding with my grandfather who has been building benchrest guns for a long time so it will only run me the cost of materials. But I will certainly go and shoot before doing it! Thanks

Yes if you plan to use a can on it all the time then I would go 24-26" area.
