6.5x47 Lapua

My 27" Krieger x47L HAMMERS with 135 A-Tips and Varget in Lapua brass. One hole at 100yds and sub 0.5moa 5 shot groups at 1000yds.

5 shots at 100yds

135 A-Tips are crazy accurate in mine

Your old posts in this thread was a large part of me “trying” varget with the 135s. I put trying in quotes because all I did was load 10 at each of the 2 charge weights and leave the seating die where it was for the h4350 load.

Going off of my limited knowledge; the JGS reamer (more popular for 140 class bullets) has a .163 freebore. I'd guess that .175 could get the job done if you wanted to run 150+ projectiles... but you'd might want just a little more freebore than that.

.225 does sound excessive. That is what I run in my 7-300 PRC, and my 195gr Berger is ~.130 longer than the 153gr/.264.

Sorry, I have no definite answer. Just wanted to share what little I knew in hopes you can piece together info. Hopefully your gunsmith knows more. If not, I know a guy who has been chambering that cartridge for over 15 years.
@Roadrace33 225fb might be a bit long, but it'd work just fine with the heaviest 65 bullets.

I have a 65aum with 200 and 240k freebore for 156s. My 7-300prc is 240 for 195s. I have shot a lot of the 153.5 and 156 in 7.5tw saami 65cm. Touching the lands in a new saami chamber the cartridge is around 2.980, too long for most mags, I jumped them 35k till I couldn't fit in the mag anymore. Now I'm jumping them 60-65k at 2.945 oal with 1800 ish rounds on the barrel. Jumping them 30k I'm just be low neck shoulder junction. Now that the throats burned, jumping 65k is about the same position, it shoots just fine, I just don't really like the bearing below the neck.

6.5x47 has a neck length of 0.317, oal of 1.860(looking at chamber spec)
6.5cm has a neck length of 0.294, oal of 1.925

So a 6.5x47 with 175 freebore with its extra neck length is basically the same as a saami 65cm with its 199fb, by 0.001, however the case length is 0.065 shorter. Using my numbers of 2.980 with a 153.5 touching lands with a 65cm saami chamber, the 175fb 6.5x47 would be 2.915 oal roughly. There's plenty of room here to use a 200fb with the X47 and be above the neck shoulder junction jumping 30-30k would have you around a coal of 2.905+-. Basically having 65cm fb and throat on the X47 chamber. I have had zero problems shooting 140-144 Bergers in saami 65cm throat, I typically start jump at 50k and they usually shoot really well between 60-70 off.

Sweet. This is great info! Now I just need to decide if I wanna buy an x47 reamer, or use his .199 CM reamer…decisions decisions…

I'm kinda wondering if running a 153.5 at 2680 with 40.5gr H4350 VS a 140 from a X47 with 39gr of varget there will be much of a barrel life difference. Friend of mine(very good shooter, reloader and bolt gun guy in general) had his 65x47 take a velocity/accuracy dump on him at 2800 rounds, strictly match use. So many people talk about barrel life, a 65cm should last 3500+, 65x47 4000 rounds, 6br 3500 rds, this all may be true with slow rates of fire, 5 shot strings. But once you start doing 10-12 shot strings under 2 mins, lots at 90 seconds, I think there's a large decline in barrel life VS had the same rifle been ran more leisurely.

Very true and this also depends on the load your shooting.

For example, 39gr Varget under a 140 in x47L is a very very hot load. That load will wear a barrel out fast.

My 140 Hybrid load with varget is 37.2gr 2830 out of my 27" Krieger.

Here is another question, I've read of some stuff a long time ago with brass not fitting in this chamber unless it was neck turned. Is this a thing of the past for this chambering? For the life of me I cant find Alphas reamer specs. I was going to order the Alpha 175 FB to send to the smith to try, and was curious if Lapua brass will fit, or if i should just use Alphas brass.

If someone posts what a loaded Alpha neck diameter is I can tell you what the Lapua is and you can compare to the reamer print but I doubt Alpha would make brass that required everybody to turn them otherwise sales would be miserable

I'd be surprised if Alpha went tight on the neck dimension, more likely theyd be larger than some existing x47 reamers IMO. My lapua loaded stuff is 0.290" and I think my current chamber is 0.295". I think there are some 0.2944 neck reamers too. I wouldn't want to go any tighter than that and I would be surprised if Alpha did.
