If you are going to use Hodgdon powder I would recommend H1000 for barrels 26"+ and H4831sc for 24", Retumbo seems too slow.

Max for H1000 is going to be about 65.5 (start at 61) and with H4831sc max is about 62.5 (start at 58) with 180 class bullets, as always work up to these loads. Note that is in a long action with bullets seated long with 0.180" freebore. If you are in a short action with a shorter freebore then your max load and starting load should be less.

Trim to length for brass is 2.025"

26" long barrel
Brass: Nosler
Primer: CCI BR2
Powder: 65.5 H1000
Bullet: 180 Berger VLD jammed 0.010" into the lands 3.025" OAL 2960fps

24" long barrel
Brass: Nosler
Primer: CCI BR2
Powder: 62.5 H4831sc
Bullet: 180 Berger VLD jammed 0.010" into the lands 3.025" OAL

24" long barrel
Brass: Nosler
Primer: CCI BR2
Powder: 63.0 H4831sc
Bullet: 180 Berger Hybrid 3.060" OAL

I am in the process of building my first rifle and decided to go with a 7RSAUM. I am wondering what data people have on 168s. I need help to know what specs I should make my dummy rounds to. I am using Nosler brass and Berger hunting VLDs in 168. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

Brownells has sent notice to all that have Remington 7mm RSAUM brass on backorder that Remington is not going to supply this brass and all backorders are being cancelled. I spoke with Brownells and they say it is unknown if Remington will produce it at a future date but at this time Brownells has deemed it discontinued. The website still shows a "notify me when back in stock" option but Brownells says this will be removed.

Here is my 7 SAUM load:

180gr Berger Hybrid (which I point)
62.0gr of Retumbo
2.950" OAL
Fed primer
Nosler brass

In a short action, DBM rifle w/ a Krieger 9 twist, 26". Does 2900fps at the muzzle, SD 10-ish.

The pointed Hybrid increases the BC by ~5%, to 0.70 G1 BC.

Love the rifle, cartridge and projectile. Finished top 5 at ASC with it. Had a 3rd hit at 1960yds (still looking for a >2000yd hit). Absolutely pounds at a mile.

For guys looking for brass, Bullets.com has a good stock:

bullets.com/search?s=category%3abrass&s=cartridge:7mm+SAUM&o=1

Not cheap stuff, but the brass, loaded to moderate pressures, lasts a long time. In the long-run, get good stuff, take care of it, and you will get many many more hits than with cheap-o brass. Hits at long range all all about getting the ES/SD of MV down, and good brass is the quickest route to that outcome!

Guys with the 6.5 Saum are claiming 2500 rounds/barrel using H1000. Are you seeing this kind of longevity?

Wish I shot enough to drive that many rounds thru my rifles. I just don't have the time to get out that much. My 7 SAUM has 1000 rounds on it and it shoots great, no sign of wear. I don't abuse it however.

what are your thoughts on H1000 with 162 AMAX or 150LR Accubonds. My hunting rifle is a Crescent Customs 7SAUM with 25" #3 Bartlein. right now i am at 59g of h4350 with the 150LR AB = 3054fps

I would think H1000 would be a tad too slow for those lighter bullets. Folks get excellent results with H4831SC and the 162's but I've only shot 168's and heavier out of mine and since I have a bunch of H1000 that is what I use. Picked up some Retumbo recently to test as its burn rate is close to Reloder 25 which has yielded decent accuracy potential but I don't like the temperature shifts up here at 7500'! H1000 will certainly push the lighter bullets out but I think there are better powders for the lighter bullets.

Haven't been able to get my hands on H1000 so picked up some of IMR's new 7977, it's just above H1000 on the burn rate chart. Anyone done any testing with this? I've found some data for 7MM RM and was going to use the minimum for that as a starting point in my 7SAUM with 168 VLD Hunter and 180gr Hybrids.

Just finished a 7mm SAUM build on a Tikka action. Pics and details on page 11 of Tikka T3 thread in Bolt Action sub forum.

27" Bartlein

Norma Case

RWS LR Primer

Berger 180gr Hybrid

COAL 2.950" (15 thou off the lands)

62.3 gr Retumbo/AR2225 (for aussies)

2900fps

Put 8 shots into .393" at 100 yards, bipod and rear bag off bench.

Shot a comp on weekend at 300, 400, 500 yards. Load appeared to work OK at these short distances

7mm SUAM will feed out of Accurate 308 AICS mags, mine have no front plate. I could fit 8 in a 10 round mag. No feed lips or other mods needed.

I'm in the beginning phase of a new build and I know I want a 7mm something , what kind of barrel life can I expect from a 7SAUM and what DBMs work best with this cartridge ? . I'm hoping the Alphas are GTG as I don't think they need any modifications .

Excuse me if this is the wrong section to post these questions but I want opinions from people with real experience using this cartridge .

Thanks !

Re: 7 SAUM

love this cartridge...

26" barrel on a 700 short action...

168 vld

4831sc 60 gr

Rem 9 1/2M

2865 FPS

couldn't find the next node

180 Hybrid

H1000 64.0gr

CCI BR2

2895 fps

.75" groupings

180 Hybrid

Retumbo 65.3 gr

CCI BR2

2930 FPS

.65" MOA out to 1000 yards...

so alpha mags are the way to go...

1700 rounds down the barrel... and still holding under 3/4 moa consistently

what is the trick to building this on a Long Action?

Really no trick. Just run a freebore of .180 to .200 seems to be about right so you can seat the 180's long. Now that the 195 Bergers are available it probably would require a bit more freebore.

I'm curious here. I'm in between a 7mm saum and a 6.5 saum for my next barrel.

What I'm seeing with the 7saum all around is that guys shooting 162-168gr bullets are in the 2800-2950 range, and guys with 180gr hybrids are shooting 2850-2900, also.

Why such a small gap between them, with a 10% lighter bullet?

Also, anyone have any data on the new 195gr Bergers?

7 SAUM has no problem driving the 162-168gr bullets into the 3000's. Loads with that bullet at 2900 are either on short barrels or really low pressure.

I've been torn with the same question.

I have everything for the 6.5 GAP SAUM ready but looking at the numbers, it seems like the 7 SAUM might be a better hunting rig. I am NOT concerned with barrel life but want the most temperature stable powder I can use which looks like H1000 or 7977.

Anybody have REAL DATA using these powders and the 160ish bullets in say a 26inch barrel? Again - this is for a hunting rig. Can I realistically get over 3000 using something like the Hornady ELD-X 162gr with H1000? Anybody actually running it? Anybody tried their 175gr ELD-X? 2900 possible with the 175 with H1000? Quickload shows over 100% case capacity to get it there so looking for real life data.

This would be running in a SA with Wyatt box so I can load 2.9ish OAL

Anyone have data for the Berger 195 EOL's with the 7 SAUM? Just ordered a barrel today that will be 1:8.25 twist and 26" long. Got some of the 195's on the way to make a dummy round and see if I'll use an existing L/A I have laying around.

Curious if 2900 fps is possible or if it's looking more like somewhere in the 2800's with the 195's

Re: 7 SAUM

So I just got a WSM Bolt for the last build I did on a Surgeon 591 so basically I have a switch barrel in a 6.5x47 and a 7mm SAUM.

Bought 100 pieces of brass, dies and a used barrel off of another 591 action so the barrel threaded fine all I had to do was hand ream 4-5 thou off of the chamber to achieve proper head spacing.
Now I was told the barrel had around 1k rounds down the tube so I do plan to re-barrel in the future but taking factory Norma brass loaded up with 63g of H1000 with Berger Classic Hunters the gun shot a 0.35" group out of 5 rounds at 100 yards with a SD of 12 and ES of 25.
My velocity was 2916, 2918, 2920, 2932, 2944 and 2940 all measured with a Magno-Speed...

My question is I need to do a little load development to find the next node as the Hodgdon On-line recommends a load from 64.0 grains to 67.0 grains....
But the Hodgdon published velocity for the 64.0 grain load is 2,770 and I'm a full grain less than that but my velocity is 140 fps faster??
Is this normal??..

I have been trying to find primers for round development. I have yet to fire anything through my gun.

I have a 26 in barrel and am wondering if there is anything comparable to a CCM BR2. I am unable to find them locally. I already have Nosler brass, Berger 180s and 168s that I will try and H1000.

Ideas?

I'd try whatever you have on hand. I use CCI BR2 but Federal 210M or even a Winchester Large Rifle ect. Look for problems and if there isn't any hang fires, primer flow and the accuracy is acceptable I'd carry on.

Using 58.5g I later had good results (.5 Moa 3rds) but they are not going real fast. 2720fps out of my 24" barrel. (Hunting build). Seating depth was 2.237" B-O as my chamber is not real deep. There is still empty space in the case so I will try going above 60g to try to find another node.

I'm in the same boat as you. 3.108 is just off the lands and will be using H4831SC first and if that's not acceptable I'll try H1000. Local shops seem to have a lot of both.

Some data from a friend's 7 SAUM that I'm doing load development for...

Barrel is a 25.25" 9 twist Krieger, no-turn neck for necked 300 SAUM cases, throated long for 180 Hybrids.

Remington 300 SAUM cases necked down to 7mm, CCI 250 primers, 180 Hybrids loaded .010" off the lands at 3.020 OAL, H1000 powder.

Node at 63.25gr, 2900fps on the Labradar. Just under 1/3 MOA for 3 shots @ 300Y when doing OCW testing.

One thing I'd figure I should mention is I missed that a couple of Nosler cases slipped into the batch when I was loading... different point of impact and 45fps increase with the Nosler brass compared to the Remington brass at the same charge weight. Will be separating the brass by headstamp, looks like the Noslers need about 0.6-0.7gr less powder to match the Remington cases for velocity.

I'd say H4831sc is going to be too fast for the 195's. H1000 and I'd even try Retumbo. If pure speed is what you are after and you are not concerned with temperature sensitivity then one of the Reloader options would likely yield more speed but the MV will vary with the ambient temperature, hence why I stick to Hodgdon Powders.

Since there is little info on Reloader 26 in the 7 saum I thought I would post my recent pressure test with the 175 Hornady Eld-x. 24" barrel on a model 70 wsm action. Throated close to saami spec.

My hunting load for this past season was 58.5g of H4831sc in Norma cases with a 210 primer seated at 2.205" base to ogive. MV-2720. While not a max pressure load it didn't have a whole lot left.

With no no data out there for a 175 I used the Berger 195 data above as a starting point.

57- 2720
57.8 - 2745
58.2 - 2775
58.6 - 2808
59.2 - 2844
60.2 - 2916
60.6 - 2923
61 - 2951
61.5 - 2964
62 - 2969
62.4 - 3002 stopped here due to heavier bolt lift. No flattened primers.

Measured using a Magnetospeed at approx 35 degrees.

I will probably try to find an accuracy node around 2950-2965.

I did start to crunch powder around 61 or so seating at 2.204" base to ogive.

Finalized load development with Reloader 26

175 eld-x
Norma brass
61.2g RL 26
Federal 210 primer
seated .015" off the lands (2.247" b-o)

using new Norma brass they are going about 2990 fps out of my 24" barrel. Bolt lift is normal and primer edges are still rounded.

Thank you wrhunter. I have a Rem 700 SA, Krieger 1 in 8.5, finished to 24" plus a Badger Thruster brake. Chamber is cut with a PT&G .180"FB reamer. I'll try your RL26 numbers and see how it works for me.

I'll be using Rem brass and Fed 215M primers.

What reamer are y'all using for the 168's? My smith has a FB of .060 and .055 on hand, and I cant decide if I wanna run this in an SA or a defiance XM action

Is anyone running the 151 Warner Flatlines with IMR7828ssc? I'm just looking for a starting point for a ladder test at 600 yards.

Any help is appreciated!

New 24" barrel
New norma brass
210M primers
162 ELD-M at .020 jump (2.930 OAL)
61.8 gr of RL26 is 2975 FPS
I expect it to speed up a little
I only have 13 rounds down the barrel but 62 grouped at .4 for the first 3 shots out of the new clean bore.
Fired two small ladders at 400 yards with 61-62.5 all eight shots grouped less than .5 MOA
61.5 and 62 were the tightest to each other but they were all good so going with 61.8 grains.ders.
Interested to see how the FF brass does/

Does anyone have any recommendations for a powder to use for the 175 ELDX bullets? I am trying to work up loads for my SAUM and I am finding my gun seems to prefer the lighter pills. I don't want to go lower than a 160 grain if at all possible.
I have tried the 168 Berger Hunting VLDs with 4831SC and 180 VLDs with H1000. Do you think H1000 would be ok for a 175 in a 1-9 twist barrel? Finished length is 26 inches. I ran out of 180s and honestly don't want to buy another box until I see what the 175 ELDX bullets do. I still have plenty of H1000 but didn't find any load data in the Hornady book for the H1000

Looking at the load data above it appears I need to try RL26 in mine. I have a Proof barrel on a long action throated for the 180's but I only get 2750FPS out of a 24 inch barrel with 61.5 grains of H1000 and it has a slight ejector mark. This is with Norma brass and loaded long. My barrel is 1-9 twist and has about 45 rounds through it so far. A little disappointed in the speed I am getting. I am not a big fan of the RL powders but not sure what else to try. I have tried H4831sc with similar results to H1000. I get pressure signs before I get any speed.

I was able to get out a couple weeks ago with the new (to me) ELD Match 180 grain bullets. Loaded at mag length (2.979) I was getting great results at 200 yards with H1000. I had them at 64.3 grains. There are ever so slight ejector marks and no sign of a heavy bolt. I need to retest again when I have more favorable wind conditions but that load looks promising

I love this thread, Rechambering from 7RM to 7Saum and I can't believe all the pet loads here. I'm impressed

I don't have the rifle yet, but I am re-chambering from 300WM to 7 RSAUM. I just got a box of the Sierra 197s. Is anyone using these yet, or will I be the first one? Please post some results if you are using them.

I have seen other post where they are using the 197, check the required twist I think it's headed for the 1-7. Plus , The 195 Berger will go with 1-8, from what I'm reading but the 197 need a faster twist.

8 gets a stability of around 1.5. Sierra writes 7.5 on the box, but I’m getting a 7.7 bc that is what’s available.

Sounds like that will work,!!! I have a bunch of 7saum Norma brass coming in this week, enough to sort into match groups by weight after neck turning, Plan on working up 180Vld and 195 Berger loads out of a pair of 1-8 Brux barrels, 30 inch heavy varmit and a 29 inch number 4 for the deer.

7 SAUM in a short action Bighorn TL-3, 30" barrel, 7 twist
Norma brass
Berger 195gr EOL
COAL 2.95", mag fed from Accurate WSM 7 round mag
Federal 210M primer
RL-26 59.6gr
2870 fps

What’s the shortest barrels you guys are running?

What moa are u getting out of your set up? Are you strictly a big horn man? Sounds like a nice rig

It's shooting about 0.4MOA 5 shot groups at 100 yards, still need to run it out to distance and true the BC on the 195's to see what they get after being pointed.

Yes, strictly shooting Bighorn right now. Mostly 223 and 6BR variants for competition, only built the SAUM for an ELR match later this spring.

.4. Moa 5 shot group is awesome, I'm building the Saum for 1000 yard F class, And deer hunting, Trueing up a Stiller Predator for the job, are you shooting F class? Have a .284 in the works also

I have two ranges within 40 minutes either direction with F class it makes it easy. One is 500 the other is 1000 yards

Finally have my load dialed in.
Virgin Norma Brass.
180 ELD match.
61.6 grains of H1000.
Wlr non magnum primers.
2.955 oal. 0.02 off the lands for my rifle.
28” Bartlein 8 twist tube. On a trued Rem 700
Shooting .25moa.
2949 5 shot average with SD of 6.7 shooting through SiCo Omega can.

Mag feeding in a short action. When I began this build lots of people said no way you can get over 2900 in a short action and be able to mag feed, if you’re planning to build, just do it. Couldn’t be happier.

That sounds great. I had to sideline my project for some time.

I’m waiting on my medium predator action. Have you found they need to be trued?

To answer on the predator, I had my doubts in the beginning how ever after a lug lapping job and proper chambering, (First chambering was from a place in rapid city ) that was flat sloppy and had me worried that the stiller sucked bad,,,,, however after identifying the problem to be elsewhere than the action and chamberd in 7RSAUM the rifle will shoot 1/3 moa while fire forming brass with 183 SMK at 1000 yards, So yes I'm a believer in the predator, It outshoots a defiant .284

Forgot to add just started load testing h1000 and omg fast, Leaving ejector marks but not flattening primers, going to back down a grain or two and should be getting 2975 with the 180VLD going to swap barrels after breaking in the brux heavy varmit to a 28.5 inch brux 4 contour for hunting. I'm a 7mm guy so hope all goes well with tge 6.5

Just got mine back from WTO with a 28" Bartelin 7 twist chambered for 183 sierra matchkings.

Load developed is using once fired Norma brass
62.1 grs H1000
CCI BR2 primers
OAL 3.145"
MV was listed at 2899 fps during load development but I have duplicated the load with virgin Norma brass and only getting 2800 fps.

I saw velocity increase when I finished firing my virgin Norma 7 SAUM brass and then fired it a second time. Had to back the charge down almost half a grain to match velocity from virgin brass.

I was also advised not to do it on a short action because what you have could not be done. I'm going to have to re-work my load. Should be getting close to what you are seeing with my long action and those 183 Sierras.

Yeah a lot of people said it wasn't possible on the good old inter web. But talking to the gunsmith he said he had done several on a short action and they were getting 180's at 27-2800 on 24 and 26" barrels. Thats why I went with 28" barrel, try to utilize the extra tube to get a slower burning powder to send it at a higher speed. I am mag feeding them with no issues. But I did work up a 162 ELD load for chitz and giggles and WOW.

Ok, my 180 load is great but I felt like I could get better luck with 162's, and WOW!!! I got a 162 ELD Match doing 3327 SD of 10. Shot same size group as the 180's averaging around .25 MOA @ 100. Shot a group at 820 yards shot right around .5 MOA at that distance. 90 couple degrees and 12mph winds. Shot the group pretty fast because I was melting. But very happy with this load. I had another node doing 3343 but had SD of 30fps. The group was shot with the load with he higher SD. I think I can get the groups to .3-.4 at this range after some tuning. More load development coming. Im hoping to get the 3327 node to a little lower SD. Then gonna take it to a mile.

Once fired Norma 7 SAUM brass. 65.5 grains of H1000. Seated .010 off the lands, OAL was 1.948". This was the 3327 with SD of 10 load. Mag fed with 0 issues.

I have been shooting a 7mm saum for years. I currently have 7 barrels chambered and ready to go for my 2 full custom 7mm saums. I have also shot out several . I change my own barrels etc. I say this to prove how familiar I am with this cartridge . Speeds of 162 grain bullet at over 3300 is either from an extra long barrel 32-34 inches, a result of a faulty chrono or excessive pressure. I would hate to see people try to duplicate that speed as it would be down right dangerous. I am sure you will hear from others.

I’ve had friends with 162s going 3000fps from a 22” barrel pretty reliably.

At 30” barrel assuming 25fps per inch of barrel that would put you around 3200fps give or take depending on load and barrel variable.

I agree to get to 3300fps you’re looking at a probable chronograph error, really long barrel, a barrel that’s a freak of nature, or loads are really hot.

Not saying it’s impossible but something doesn’t add up at first glance.
Your 1.948 coal seems really short especially with 65.5grains of powder. I’m not even sure that’s possible.

Brass length alone for my saum cases measure 2.020” after turning and trimming.

Took mine out to a mile this morning. First time ever shooting anything beyond 1k. Conditions were as follows:

Temp 71 degrees
Humidity 60%
Pressure 29.53 hg
Elevation 578 ft
DA 1650 ft
Wind 2 mph left to right

Used 2800 fps as muzzle velocity and .377 G7 bc for the 183 gr SMK. Dialed 18.8 mils and 1.1 left windage for spin drift and what little wind there was.
First shot was high and just off the right edge of the target. Dialed down 1 mil and 1.3 on windage and impact was still slightly high but center target. Settled on 17.5 mils and was able to put 3 rds about 12" apart. I do believe I need to use a different chrono to re-test muzzle velocity as working numbers it seems that 2910 fps puts me in line with the elevation and bc numbers I was using. Impacts were not hard to spot on steel or in the dirt from that distance. Definitely need to fine tune the load especially for es and sd but later in the fall.

28” Bartlein barrel. 65.5 grains of H-1000 WLR primer. Shot 20 through the chrono right after 20 7-08 140’s doing the same 2540 they always do out of my sons rifle. I’m sure there could be a viariance but it’s close. 64 grains was 2240, 64.5 was 2280, 65 was 3300, 65.5 was 3327, 66 was 3340.

I shot at 820 yards. Ballistic calculator said to dial 3.7. I used that and went 5 for 5 in the center of the target. I can’t see it being off by much. Ran the numbers through the calculator and at 3200 it would have been 4.2 mils. I wasn’t that high. Here is the group. This was the 3343 speed with the much higher SD. Like I said I was very surprised by the numbers. But verified at 820 yards is the reason I posted. If I thought my chrono was off I wouldn’t have posted.

I noticed a lot of you guys' loads are with standard LR primers. Any strategy with this or is it just what you have on hand?

Try RL26 ...My 180s are coming out at 3030 ..My 162's are coming out at 3170 but it is not a hot load but super accurate. At 1500 yards I have a few 5 shot group which my hand would cover..I just wish Lapua would make brass for the 7mm SAUM . It is just so inherently accurate. If everyone who owns one or potential owner would email Lapua asking for 7mm saum brass we may just see it happen.

I find standard primers more accurate in this cartridge BUT I do use mag primers in hunting season and readjust the load a bit( because of the cold weather).
