I was given 400 rnds of once fired 1985 Lake City Match .308 today. Each of the cases has small vertical markings around the circumference of the case about 1/4 above the head.

I'm assuming this is some kind of identifier so a person could tell at a glance which kind of ammo is in a magazine?

    Anybody seen this?

    Thanks, Keithr41

If I remember correctly it was put there so you could tell even in the dark that it was not for combat use. That was before the SMK were cleared for combat use.

That's the one. The load data listed on Terry's response is 42gr IMR 4895 with a 168gr HPBT. I'm getting more velocity (2650) with 41.5gr IMR 4895 and a 168. Granted it's from a bolt gun not an M-14. I'm thinking this is probably the reason? Anybody differ with that opinion?

I get approx the same velocity with said load. Most all chrono readings listed in my records for military loads are at 78ft. Not sure if the chrono readings was fired from a M14. Most all guys I see shooting thru chronographs are at most 20ft from the muzzle not 26yds.

Altitude, RH%, & temp could have a affect also.
