88 ELD-M in .223 Rem

Factory 556 RPR. 20 inch barrel. I am sure you could get 2800 with an 88 using H4895.

2825 in a 20” with 4895 is probably not going to be obtainable. Probably closer to 2700. They have a pretty long bearing surface. My 88 in a 29” barrel throated for this bullet pops primers at 2875

This is 24.4 Varget with 80.5 Berger at 2856fps I am working with 80 ELDs with 24.4 Varget now I will let you know as soon as I get the results.

I think I got the 80 ELD figured out. 24.4 target and set back .010 off the lands 2860. Now will have to try the 88s

Thinking of ordering 7k of the 88eld bullets for my long barreled 223 Wylde.
Wonder if they would run in a 1-8 twist 20” barreled ackley?

Is anyone trying these out of a magazine? I'm guessing they protrude into the case too far, but was curious if anyone had tried it and what velocity was.

I got ab 2875 with a very stout load of H4895. Not enough to supplant using the 75 ELD-m.

Are you loading to factory OAL? Which powder? I'm getting ready to buy gain twist barrel and am wondering if I can make it work with this bullet.

I'd expect a COAL in the ballpark of 2.45-2.51" with 88s in an appropriately throated (ie. Wylde or longer) 223, which should work just swimmingly with AICS-pattern 223 magazines.

There's no way they would work @ AR15 maglength, just too long (as are the 75s), but they're fine in AICS mags. I've run them in Ruger 223 AI mags, and in an Accurate Mag without issue, loaded in 223 AI.

The time I tried them I was loading about 23.8 gr of 4895 to 2.49 COAL in AICS mags. Mine is a 7 twist 223 Rem MATCH chamber (a bit tighter in neck an longer throat).

Bringing this back to life. Any more info.

might help if you ask a more specific question. There’s plenty of data in this thread to get you started with the 88s And load data. Not sure what else you need to grab some to try out if you want. Im happy with the 88s in my rifle but it’s def the limit for this cartridge. The 80 is better suited in my opinion for the 223. The 88 is better for a 224v or 22Br honestly.

I had to give up on the 88's in my 7 twist 28" 223AI/2814 fps/ yes a light load. Some weren't making it to the target or would wack out, especially after 40 rounds post cleaning.

Got a ladder test ready for when the window opens on a windless morning. 75 ELDM/H4895 and this time I'm going to crank those suckers up! Hoping for 3050 -3100 fps.

BTW, I'm selling about 450 of the 88's, if someone wants them please contact me.

Well specifically I loaded up 10 the other day with Varget and was getting 2700 FPS. 25” xcaliber barrel. The 75 eld has been somewhat hard to tune imo so I was looking at the 88. Varget is scarce so I was mostly curious about powder and velocity guys are getting. It looks like the other common powder is H4895 which is also scarce. I have some 8208 xbr on hand and thought about trying that but I didn’t see anywhere in this thread somebody was running xbr.

I forgot to mention that Ned ludd, a high scoring paper shooter, who has shot a ton of 223 heavies in 223, has suggested people go with a .219 bore instead of the normal .218 bore, and in 7 twist vs a 6.5-6.8 twist. I plan on doing this as well as going with a 5R twist configuration. Combined these are supposed to eliminate blow ups.

Also gave up on 88’s in my 223. couldnt get em to group in a 1-8 twist. got great speeds. over 2900 before blew a primer. tried from jamming to 80 off. nvr could group. 1.5”+

couldnt get the 75’s to group either.

ended up settling with 80gr bergers and they flat shoot. one hole fo sho.

VVN135

26” barrel 1-8
80’s

You should be able to hit 3100 with 75 ELDM/H4895 out of an AI with no problem. I am getting 3000-3035 out of a 223 with 24.9 gr H4895, CCI450, and Nammo brass. 1-8" Tikka varmint, 24" factory barrel suppressed. Loading .020" off the lands at 2.49" COAL.

It's almost Easter, I'm resurrecting this thread again!

I have a 1/7 twist 223 Ackley pre-fit barrel on it's way. Loaded up some 88's in twice fired Federal 223 brass. 23.3 grains XBR 8208. COAL of 2.52" which just fits in the mdt polymer 223 mag.

I don't have my barrel yet and don't know what the reamer specs were, hopefully l won't be jammed in the lands at that length. I'm guessing it's a standard 223 Ackley reamer if there is such a thing.

I'm at 5400' ASL, anyone running a similar combo? Just curious if people are still trying to get these to work, variable success it seems.

I just finished loading the last box of the 1000 88s i originally ordered. They have been shooting great for me. I have 2 top 5s and a top 20 running this setup in 3 matches (1 local and 2 PRS 2 day). Im running a 27" Hawk Hill 6.5 twist with a custom reamer i spec'd out with JGS and my TBAC Ultra 7. I also milled out the front and back of the plastic on my accurate mags to accommodate for the long freebore. I'm using Varget, cci 450s, and lapua brass pushing the 88s at 2890 from a regular 223 (not an Ackley)

Thanks for the info. I have some loaded up that I'm hoping will stabilize in my 1/7, shorter chamber. If not I may have 975 of them to sell you in the near future, lol.

What's your freebore and coal on this reamer out of curiosity?

223 wylde chamber with about 1k rds on it. 24” mullerworks 7.5 twist, 23.6 grains of varget, 2806 avg FPS. 620yd group, 3-5 mph wind

I have been shooting the 88 eldm. To the lands I am 1.530. I asked my gun smith but he said he used a regular reamer. (Not sure)

At first a look at the numbers very closely comparing 88 grain ELD to the 80 grain

Got mine going, it's showing promise. 223AI, 2.25" COAL, just got brass formed, starting load workup after 200 rounds.

23" button pre-fit for Origin from Preferred Barrel Blanks (great guys) . Node appears to be at 24.5 grs XBR 8208. That charge is giving 2788 fps avg assuming barrel is done speeding up. I'm debating on calling it good there or looking for a node closer to 2900 fps.

785 yards is the furthest I have shot the 88eld. It shot just as good as my 6mm br but not quite the hit percentage as my 6.5 Creedmoor.

Actually no as I run a 223 match reamer with 0.190 freebore

It run 75 and 80 ELD-M perfectly so the 88 should be good too.
Digging up an old thread.
How did you get on with this?

Thinking of doing a 223 with a long freebore to run 88elds (.169 seems to be common) but not sure how well it'll run lighter bullets.

Would be great to be able to use both 88s for short-medium range matches, then cheaper 75bthp for practice/varmint shooting.

I’m right at the gate of the 7000 rounds. I’ll chamber a new one this summer.
I had the best results with AR comp. If you want to run 88’s I strongly suggest you to ask you gunsmith to run an unithroater to get you freebore from 0.168" to around 0.190". It’s the key for speed with 223’s

Have you been running lighter bullets or just stuck to the 85gr+?
What speeds you getting?

Lightest were 75gr ELDM. I shoot those 95% of the time and 90 gr Atip otherwise.

26inch barrel
75gr - 2930 fps (Ar-Comp)
90gr Atip - 2810 fps ( 6.5 Staball)

Did you find the 75gr bullets difficult to tune with the longer FB? Or the ELDMs fairly jump tolerant.

I'm seeing 3000 FPS with Leverevolution and 88s in a 26" long throat 223. I haven't messed with seating depth yet, no time. I imagine I'll settle on a slightly lower charge but I saw no signs of pressure with any of these charges on a pretty warm day. 5000". COAL is around 2.54ish" jumping around .030"

LC brass, CCI 41s

I suppose I should share my results with Varget also. LC brass, CCI41s. I like the 41s for hot loads. They seem to do well. I dont remember seeing any pressure with these loads either but speed is quite as fast as I would like for the 88s. Again 26" 223 7.5tw Bartlien.
