Was at Home Depot today and walked into the tool section. Something caught my eye and looked very familiar to me. The Empire Protractor.

Being an avid DIY'r and bored to death, I looked at that protractor and mind started clicking.......

I live in Colorado and although most of my target and steel shooting is on flat land, I hunt in the mountains. I did buy a Badger ACI for my LR rifle, but was looking for a solution to take hunting. Yes, there is the slope doper, and it is rather inexpensive, but for $9, I had to give it a whirl.

The mod was almost too easy.

The protractor comes with a rivited stud, a brass retaining ring, washer and keeper.

It was as simple as using a 1.5mm allen as the stylus, and then burring a hole into the brass ring.

I silver soldered the allen key into the hole, cut to length, then painted it white. You can use super glue, or epoxy.

I then opened the ID of the ring to 1/4" to allow it to rotate freely.

Last, is to get a washer that will fit over the threads, but not the stud, this one with .166" ID did the trick

Now the pic show the project 90% complete, since the numbers and graduations are etched, but the numbers are wrong. You can search for the angle / cosine formula and work it all out and etch your own.......OR if you search google images you will find the PERFECT template. A little photoshop, some scaling, and print out your overlay. Use vinyl paper, or print on paper and use packing tape to secure it to your plate.

I tested mine in conjunction with my ACI and it was Dead Nutz on.

Sure it is ghetto, and yes the slope doper is only $20 , but this will make for a neat afternoon project. Whole thing only took 30 min to make.

The image below is not complete, because I am not trying to break any copyrights or infringe on any patents, I will not show the final product. The plate is the size of a credit card and will fit easily in your front hunting vest pocket.

To use it, you just just rest it on your top turret and read the correction. Multiply by the solution on your dope card and dial in the adjusted solution.
