A real budget R700 build

I'm not sure where to start. For a long time is wanted to build a Remington 700. At first I couldn't afford one or find one that was not over prized. I ended up with a Mauser 98 which I ended up building. You can find that build in the threads.

So one day I found a guy on armslist that wanted to trade a new 700 wood tech adl for a glock. So I traded my glock for the rifle.

Then after that I sold my Mauser 98 and kept the glass and rings swfa 10x42 mil/mil. I sold the rifle for $750. So that is all I have to build the rifle.

Started its life out as a ADL wood tech:

One of my friends was selling his HS-precision M24 style stock and floor plate. $200

<a href="http://s800.photobucket.com/user/Chaseerickson12/media/Mobile%20Uploads/A7D330B9-8BF6-4D89-A700-CE7A7FB2797E_zpsdcnknmth.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy283/Chaseerickson12/Mobile%20Uploads/A7D330B9-8BF6-4D89-A700-CE7A7FB2797E_zpsdcnknmth.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo A7D330B9-8BF6-4D89-A700-CE7A7FB2797E_zpsdcnknmth.jpg"/></a>

Then I bedded the rifle in the stock as well as threaded the bolt.

I need to fill some cracks

I have ordered an A&B barrel that is a heavy varmint counter 1-10 twist .308 I am thinking of either having it 20in or 24in I want to take it elk hunting and I want to be comfortable taking some shots at longer ranges on a elk.

Then I'm taking the 700 to the gunsmith in Everett Wa. I am going to have the action blueprinted and barrel installed. I'll give him around a $650 budget. So my total investment at that point will be $950 ish.

Let me know what you think I'll post more as I receive the barrel and after smith work is done as well as some targets.

I would be interested to hear how it shot before the work - and after !

Me too! Should be a good build! As for the 24 vs 20 inch barrel, I'm happy with my 20 inch in 308. Only taken out to 400 yard steal targets, but did its job well

I'll post a before picture this weekend I went to the range the other day. Shoots about moa in the hs stock with thin barrel. I am probably going to do a 24in barrel to stay subsonic at longer ranges

New barrel, and bolt knob! Now heading to the gunsmith!!

Chaseerickson12,

You need to define what you mean by "long shots on elk". Long shots to me is 1,000yards and over.

As someone who has hunted Elk in the Wyoming bighorn mountains, you don't want a 20" anything if you are planning to take "long shots" on Elk.

What you want is a rifle paired with a caliber that generates high enough muzzle velocities such that you end up with a retained velocity on target high enough to ensure your bullet will open up on impact. Bullets such as the AMAX have the lowest minimum velocity requirements...i believe they will open up at lower velocities than Bergers and Barnes TTSX which have a higher minimum velocity requirement...somewhere in the 1700ft/s to 1800ft/s range.

If you take a shot and hit the animal, but your bullet is below the minimum velocity, the bullet will not expand, there will be minimal internal damage (unless bullet is upset by bone) and unless the shot is perfect (takes out the heart/lungs) you will loose the animal...it will run off and die a slow and prolonged death. Not exactly the most desirable outcome.

I see you are set on a 308...fine choice. However, for all intents and purposes, your maximum shots will be limited to the 500-600yard range...assuming you are using a long barrel. Let's assume for argument's sake that you chose to hunt with a 185gr Berger VLD. In a 308 rifle with a long barel, say 24"-26", you will be looking at realistic MVs of 2600-2700ft/s. With a 2,700ft/s MV, your maximum range is 600yards. With 2600ft/s MV, 550yards.

You mentioned that you haven't decided on barrel length. My vote is for as long as practicable...26".

16" - 20" rifles are excellent long range sticks...on the internet...In real life, the velocity loss from the short barrel limits your effective range, and causes your bullet to be blow around quite a bit more by the wind...if you are willing to put in the training and bullets downrange to make up for the handicap, then roll with the short stick...but i believe short rifles belong in thick brushes where shots rarely exceed 100 or 200 yards.

I see you have a short action...that rules out the -06 or bigger 30-cals...you are stuck with the .308...it will work fine. Limit your shots accordingly, and you will tip an Elk over everytime.

I personally wouldn't waste the gun smithing fees installing an Adams and Bennett barrel if the damn thing was free, why? Because I was given one and made that mistake and I couldn't get it to shoot respectably to save my life. I know others who have had the same experience. There's a reason why good barrels blanks run $300-350. Honestly you're probably better off with the stock Remmy barrel.

Thanks for all of the info guys. I am very limited to what cartragies I can use. .308 with a 26in barrel will give me what I'm looking for. To clarify what I want is a rifle that can take an elk out at 700yards max! I'm not saying that I have the skill to take a shot that far, but I would like to have a rifle that I know has the ability to do take a animal that large at that range. As for the A&B barrel I ment to say its a Green Mountain Barrel. I have had great accuracy with these barrels in the past! I think that having the action work done now is a good investment because down the road I can put more money into a better barrel! More photos soon to come

Just sent the barrel off to the gunsmith today. I'll probably have it back in a week or two. It's a green mountain barrel I double checked. I wouldn't give the GM barrel that much crap I mean it's not a hart barrel or any other $350-400 barrels but it I have still had great performance from it and it also has 5star ratings on midway which is better then some

What's the best 20moa base for a budget? And is there a kit to make the m24 style rifle stock have an adjustable length of pull like the army m24?

Here is an update. Working up a load now with 208 hpbt

Looking really good mate.

Nice to see someone getting the enjoyment out of a project... It can be hard to stay on task and end up with something not quite suited for the intended purpose!

I'm looking into a 260 build myself and it's from an old Rem 700 action so I'm following with interest.

Good luck.

Oh... egw do a decent budget base too.

I will have to check the both bases out. Right now I'm working up a load with 208amax used 4064 41.4gr 2.83oal got a 2476fps avg.

Do any of you have any experience with this bullet and some different powders that maybe more affective. I want to get my velocity somewhere around 2550-2600

Nice build, but I would of never gotten rid of that wood tech stock. I have a 700 wood tech in 7mm rem mag and I love it. As for your question on rails I use a 20MOA rail by EGW.

I would love to throw on a heavier barrel on the wood tech stock. Do you guys know if the synthetic stock can be filed down to accommodate a heavier barrel?

<a href="http://s17.photobucket.com/user/Quagmire817/media/photo-15.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/Quagmire817/photo-15.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo photo-15.jpg"/></a>

I guess i can, if this guy did

So your saying you would rather keep your plastic stock over a H-S precision

Not really, I'm saying I love the design of the wood tech, so I'm keeping it on my deer rifle. It would be nice to throw a larger barrel on the wood tech stock. I'm a fan of the design.

Ya it maybe a cool stock, but for me the plastic stock just doesn't give the action and barrel the support for it to shoot at its true accuracy potential. If you upgrade the barrel you should think about the stock as well. That would honestly be my first upgrade with almost all the 700's there are only a few that come with good stocks worth keeping.

True. Keep in mind this is not my only 700, I wouldn't feel bad getting this stock scratched up in the woods either. I'll post a picture of the groups I get with some hand loads and timney.

I sincerely hope you werent charged anywhere near $650 to true your receiver and install the barrel! Please let us know how the green mountain shoots. I have been kicking around trying one on a hunting rifle as well.

It was $600 flat. Lap lugs true receiver, square bolt face, and install. Think that's a fair price and I got it back in 8days. rl17 at 46.8gr behind a 208hpbt, 2.87 col, 2600fps should be perfect for elk with 208amax. Going to zero this week at 100 then out to throw some lead to 1000. I'll post groups soon

I have rifles good enough for elk, but finding Anne Elk to shoot at in the same state as Everett was beyond my pay grade.
I drive 900 miles from there to shoot at Elk, deer, antelope, prairie dogs, rabbits, and ground squirrels.
The only thing I can get near Everett are raccoons, eastern gray squirrels, and crows.

I have a buddy thats running a 208 amax over reloader 17 with decent sucess

Here is an update on how she shoots. Second time shooting the rifle. Shoots great. I think I can get it around a half inch with a new trigger.

Is the spare barrel for shooting around corners?

Paint is brownells alumihide which is an epoxy paint. It makes it more resistant to gun cleaners and oils

I have done that with 3 rifles and it turns out well and is cheap. But if you don't have a 90 degree day, I would suggest building a heated cardboard box like I did.
ALUMA-HYDE® II | Brownells

Sav110223250neckLWCMbarrelBoydsTacticalstockSSSrecoillug9-29-2013.jpg

Besides using alumihide... If you don't care about paint getting messed up krylon is also cheap and gets the job done. Any one else have any good budget r700? Mine is basically done only things I want to do is dbm and a timney trigger.

It's the camera fish eye. The other barrel is the original 700adl barrel

I was just messing with you.

Nice build and thanks for posting the details of your builds like in your Mauser thread. I find that a whole lot more interesting than the usual gunporn about mail ordered rifles.

Thanks! I agree gunporn is awesome, but it is nice when you read threads on builds start to finish.

As for does the paint wear better? The answer is yes and no. I just like having a solid base coat that doesn't get messed up when you clean or go through the brush.

Also does anyone have any experience with DBM for the 700? Also what is the best fairly priced trigger?

Here is some update photos. I'm ordering the ptg dbm soon then a timney trigger. Does anyone have a good 1000yard shooting spot in Washington? My friend and I got kicked off the spot we had on highway 9020

I am near Seattle. I go 900 miles East until I see fossil digging sites, and put my targets up on a hill. Then I drive back down the road and shoot from lying in the road.
