I'm ready to switch from using IOS apps for solutions in matches. How much overlap is there between the new Garmin Foretrex vs. the Elite5700? Will it replace the functionality of the 5700?
I had hoped that the AB Sig2400 would work. But the app does not allow keying the distances in to get solutions. In a match it is impossible to range on the fly. For matches the 2400 is too limited.
Thanks

I wondered about this too and was leaning more towards the elite 5700 over the garmin. But at the same time it would be nice to have solutions right there on your wrist. But have also wondered maybe the Sig2400 with AB might be all around best depending on simplicity of inputting data

The Garmin arrived today. With only a quick once over, it is a Kestrel w/o the wind meter and temp/humidity sensor. It is much easier/quicker to change inputs on the fly; and the range card functionality is pretty cool. It has the potential to connect to all the AB devices and more... but who knows.

The documentation is nearly non-existent. There is nothing about updating the unit. On AB site they have an updated f/w. Mine shipped as v. 2.1. The website has v.3.0. I heard Nick Vitalbo on the Precision Rifle Media podcast and that was very helpful. He said that you merely drag the f/w file to the device and it would update. Mine did not. So I have no idea how to do it. I assume more info will be released.

For PRS type shooting, I think it is the way to go.

Got it. Not too worried about wind and it is constantly changing and I will use my best judgement. But temperature and humidity would be a plus and I guess thats where tempe comes in handy but then again anther item to buy. But the convenience factor on the wrist is very nice.

Is it possible to update through your phone? Or a cable and the computer?

I have been looking more and more into the 2400AB and am kind of leaning that way but curious as to the pro's and con's of the models in your thread

I got the 2400 because I thought for sure I’d be able to use the app to get solutions w/o ranging targets. Makes sense? You pay $1400 and they limit the app so it only works when you range? You’d think that would be possible, but it is not. It has huge value, as it is, but why limit the app.

There is a cable. But so far i haven’t been able to build profiles and sync. Not sure I really care, the device is well thought out for working stand-alone. The temp device is $24

FYI the Tempe unit from Garmin is only another $29 and seems to work pretty well so far. It is a wireless remote that is supposed to work to 10M. I keep it with my ammo to read closer to the real ammo temp rather than ambient and so far works as advertised.

We did some videos on this:

1) You can update via the computer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNbi03nf79E

2) You can update the manual way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWxzBl9aBKo

3) You can update with the app, however it happens in the background and can take a very long time.

4) Here is Garmin's user manual: http://www.appliedballisticsllc.com/...-701_OM_EN.PDF

Then we also keep everything on this page as up to date as we can: http://appliedballisticsllc.com/products/devices/g701/

Latest version is 2.20

I really like what I’m seeing with the Garmin. I’m a bit confused on the ‘direction of fire’ field.
On my unit with the latest f/w upgrade, when I change the dof, the windage solution does NOT change.

So if the wind is coming from 3:00 and my dof is 90deg, the solution is as a full value wind from the right. i have to set the wind to 12:00 to get the correct solution.
My wind hold never changes, regardless of where the dof is set.
Is this the way the unit is supposed to work?
If the wind is always relative to the direction of fire, what use is setting the direction of fire? The solution only updates when you change the wind direction.

Yes, DOF is in clock value not azimuth. So you will need to keep that up to date on your own.
