Accuracy for precision shooting class (measured?)

Since working on my little sporter I've found I can shoot three-shot groups of 168gr Federal GMM to just over 5" at 500 yards (my bro can shoot smaller with it) and it doesn't start getting squirrely till 600 yards. But this is in no-wind conditions and allowing cooling between each of the three shots, and again a longer period between each string.

Is 1 MOA to 500 yards considered very good, mediocre, or something else entirely (gotten a few comments implying I was lying about it, so maybe it's stellar?)?

Is 1 MOA at 500 an accurate picture of what the rifle will do when we have to let the barrel cool between shots and between strings?

Is it good enough for a class?

Danke schon.

It's a sporter bbl and shoots 1 moa, you could use it for a class. Most classes want you to have a rifle that you shoot consistently 1 MOA. Out past the 500 yard mark step up to 175 gr SMK HPBT.

Snakum,

IMHO, if your taking a class, ask your instructor first, not us. He may have a different idea.

That said, your accuracy is good enough @ 500 yds, but how far and how fast are you going to have to shoot while doing your class?

If the course of fire requires a 5 or 10 round string, with multiple students, they are not going to be happy waiting 5 or 10 minutes for you, while you wait for your barrel to cool, so you can complete the task at hand.

Best to know and speak to your instructor first.

That's what I'm looking for. Thanks. Sounds like I need to see if it will still hold MOA at five and ten round strings at those distances. Never been to any kind of precision class (except with an issue M21) so wasn't sure.

Thanks for the info on the 175gr SMK. Haven't tried that yet. Not sure my 1:12 will stabilize it or not. Will scrounge some up, definitely.

Re: Accuracy for precision shooting class (measured?)

I've heard of 1/12 barrels which wouldn't adequately stabilize a 175 SMK. Never seen one, out of hundreds of rifles with 1/12 barrels I've seen, though.

I suspect that you'll be fine.

The 168's are dicey beyond 800 yards. Sometimes 700 yards. Friends don't let friends shoot 168 SMKs.

Exception: if you're a cop, and that's what your department mandates you shoot.
