Please suggest which action is suitable for .308WIN to shooting @ 800 yards?

My friend suggest me with Surgeon - 591 Short Action Repeater. So, please comment how about this action?

I never use custom action. Just currently run with production line.

Re: Action for .308WIN

Surgeon is great, if you were going to spend the money on a Rem 700 to have it trued and blueprinted. Personally i would get a Defiance action and run with that, or check out the Bighorn Action that LowLight did a review on a week or so back.

Re: Action for .308WIN

I also suggest the 591... It's a little pricey by it's a top notch action. By the time you true up a rem 700 action, you've got already got a decent chunk of change wrapped up and myaswell go with the surgeon.

Re: Action for .308WIN

Could you suggest the spec for 800 yards shooting?

Action :
Barrel :
Trigger Guard : I prefer Badger M5
Trigger : I prefer Jewell
Stock : I prefer Mcmillan A-5

Where I can purchase the 591 ?

Most of competitors are currently using Remington 40X , Kimber Advance and Les Baer new Bolt action rifle.

So, I plan to going with custom action and barrel.

The ammo that we can find was Lapua 168gr , 175gr and Handload Moly Coated with 168gr.

Re: Action for .308WIN

I think you are getting fixated on this 800 yard shooting thing. As stated above the action will have no bearing on whether it shoots to 800 yards. In fact, all 308's will get to 800 yards it just depends on how accurately it can get there and that depends on lots of factors. You can go with a Surgeon, it is one fine action, but you can also get a Remington 700 action and have it worked on for less money. I would spend more time thinking on a barrel and who is going to do the work for me than worrying about the action.

Re: Action for .308WIN

I have a local gun smithing who can proper inlet every part for accuracy. But just need some help for info and place for order.

There are many choice for the match;
100 yards (Only Rimfire)
200 yards
400 yards
800 yards
combine 3 distance

Last time, I shoot at 200 yards but my XCR was easily to heated up than 40X (Due to their heavy barrel). So, they got the better group with more quantity than me. Because I have to let it cool down before start another target.

Re: Action for .308WIN

Then why not rebarrel your rifle and save the money to buy more ammo. In the end you are sending bullets down range, not a action.

Re: Action for .308WIN

I think it was not a nice choice to invest in a current normal action.

The new custom action will provide more effective with match barrel.

Re: Action for .308WIN

They recommend Krieger. But just find some support information about suitable twist with bullet weight.

At here, we can load ammo to match with barrel. So, we have to find the proper barrel for ammo.!!!!

The easiest ammo to find were Lapua 168gr or 175gr.

So sad.

I would go with a 11.25 or 11.27 twist for a 308, whatever your barrel maker offers, but thats just me.

Not necessarily, and I would argue not at all in a field or tactical type rifle.

Re: Action for .308WIN

nothing wrong with rem action. There are a lot of people that shoot a remington actioned rifle better than I can shoot a fancy rifle. Ive used high dollar rifles but now im going back to the remington action for reliability.

I'm very interested and curious about this answer. When I look at the cost of buying a new 700 action, truing it, getting a proper bolt handle timed and tig welded on it, I can't see how it's that much better price wise than just buying a Surgeon RSR action instead.

I'm talking about accuracy not bells and whistles, and it appeared the OP was as well.

Sure if you want done to a factory receiver all the bells and whistles that come with a custom then sure get a custom. But even this is not always what it's cracked up to be. Too tight of a custom action and a little bit of dust and dirt and you'll be wishing you had a Remington.

As in accuracy in a field or tactical rifle the Remington is just fine and 95% of the shooters will never know the difference.

And no not every Remington needs anything done to the bolt handle or timing contrary to what you read on the internet so you can remove that from your equation.

Re: Action for .308WIN

XCR, listen to Randy. Putting a better heavier barrel on will take care of your cooling/reliable grouping issues. Try it first.

It is more cost effective. Add in the cost of truing up your current action and you will be around the cost a single custom action without a barrel.

Re: Action for .308WIN

Surgeon RSR (Same quality as 591 but without the integral rail and recoil lug) Roughly $400 cheaper.
Defiance Machine (Glen Harrison's actions are outstanding)
Borden (Jim Borden is a fantastic smith that makes his own actions)
BAT (Bruce's actions are on an awful lot of BR rifles, and as a group they are about as picky as you can find)

Good luck they are all good if you insist on a custom action

Re: Action for .308WIN

I will stay with 168-175gr. How about 1:10" twist?

Could you recommend some gunsmith who can done the work for me?

I mean Action + Barrel

Re: Action for .308WIN

I had Lester do a 300WSM for me. I selected a 12 Twist #17 HV finnished at 28" and it shoots small..

Barreled action and trigger were sent to me as a complete package, all I had to do was drop it in a stock.

There are numberous outstanding Riflesmiths on this site that I would give my business to without a second thought. There are hundreds of examples of thier work here in these forums as well. Seeing that your in central Ca. there is a very well known Riflesmith in the L.A. area.

Re: Action for .308WIN

If you have a 700 short action I would suggest you just have a reputable smith true it and barrel it, then bed it into your stock.

I doubt you will see any difference between a trued factory action and a custom action in a TACTICAL match.

Now if you didn't have an action to start with, then a custom action may be more cost effective. I looked at a build on a Surgeon action because it would have been silly to pay the money for a new Remington action, then pay for the work.

Now having said all that, I have shot and won matches with a factory 700 action and barrel. It's not going to win any benchrest matches, but your XCR with good glass should be capable at any tactical match.
