Maggie’s Advice Needed on Traveling Through Indian Reservations

Going to Arizona soon. The wife and I will be traveling in our pickup and pulling my 6x12 cargo trailer. Going to spend four nights in Sedona, then to the Grand Canyon for a day and night, then home from there. Concerned about stuff I've read about reservations regarding firearms. From most of the stuff I've read the general consensus is to have any and all weapons unloaded, cased, and out of reach. Mostly concerned with Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah. I have permits from MN, FL, and UT but sounds like that doesn't matter. Need some solid advice from those that know!

Not gospel but I've been through them with lots of stuff. Including a ton of Title 2 stuff. In one.case, we knew there was a distict possibility that we would have to get off the highway briefly in a res. We contacted res police a week or so before, said who we were and what we would have/be doing. They were surprisingly chill about it. They asked that if we were going to be off the highway for whatever reason, we call em. Since that didn't happen. It was all good. Think a couple 3/4 ton suburbans full of machine guns and ammo.

In general, if you are on the highway, you are not going to have issues. Don't go exploring on their land without permission, armed or not. If you forsee stopping for whatever reason, have your stuff secured per Volkmer-McClure '86.

Oklahoma is about the most liberal state for guns, dont worry therer. Az is a consitutional carry so you'll be ok there.

Tribal police in this state are just regular police essentially... Some of the Choctaws here aren't even card-carrying Indians. Adhere to state guidelines, and you're never going to have issues in this state. Can't speak to others.

I live on a reservation.
I have family on the Navajo reservation.

For the most part there isn’t a lot of difference on vs off the rez.
Dont transport alcohol on some.
Obey the traffic laws.
Treat any tribal land as private land.

Not sure yet. When we leave the Grand Canyon if we’re gonna head towards Four Corners or straight up through Utah. We rode 191 the whole length of the state a few years ago. Stayed overnight in Chinle. Then rode from there up through Durango to Montrose and Grand Junction. Carried the whole time and never gave it a thought. But lately I’ve seen more discussion of this not being a good idea.

If your pieces are secured in your vehicle or trailer, who has to know what your private property consists of?

My vote is to remain a "Silent Professional" as the contents of your private property are of no use to anyone but you and your wife. I'd just keep my mouth shut & drive on thru peacefully.

Never had an issue, I was in the same area about 4 years ago. Never got stopped or had trouble and if I had I wouldn't not have been an idiot and told the rez cops I was armed. Just be aware that most of the areas I drove thru looked like Afghanistan or Iraq in terms of quality of buildings and conditions. Everything was bunkered up because of local crime and garbage blew freely around any rez town. Lock your doors if you want to keep your stuff.

We stayed in Sedona, it is a typical tourist hell. Food from a nice place gave us and everyone else the shits. Same on Grand Canyon, we had dinner at their historical restraunt and got the shits along with everyone else. So do not be surprised if the shits become your favorite souvenir of the trip.

Watching retarded back east assholes chase a spindly 4 point elk down the street like they saw Taylor Swift was entertaining. The view is great but everything else at the Grand Canyon was threadbare from the millions of tourists every month. It appears some asshole jumps or falls off the thing weekly. We had a retard lunge to retrieve his hat while he was doing a ghetto pose near the edge and over the fence. He had a Wile E. Coyote moment before he descended 200 feet into the rocks. While they were mopping him up they found another one from a month ago that no one saw.

Enjoy the trip and no jumping.

In general main highways are probably federal and state funded. So federal/state laws apply. Once off the main hwy tribal laws apply. The Rez here is supposedly no go for non-members to possess firearms. Never enforced, but could be if you make it.

Few friends are tribal cops, they aren't looking for trouble. Show respect and get respect.

As you probably would guess, these destinations were requested by my bride. She’s complied with all my shenanigans over the years so she gets to have a say once in awhile. She is a patient woman.

We travel through reservations every direction we travel distance in Montana.

Be respectful, stay in your lane and don't be stupid. Stay on the paved, main roads unless you need to visit a specific location.

If by chance the reservatuon is holding a powwow of nations or just a tribal conference, stop and check it out. You will be happy you did.

Check out the fireworks stands, the reservations sell the good stuff.

Be off the reservation by dark if you can, If not, stay in the best lit commercial area you can find and remember concealed means concealed.

Extreme poverty exists. Boarded up windows, probably isn't from crime. Some time shit breaks and probably dont have money to replace them. Drove to the wife's family Rez in Montana. There were several homes that had no front door. Just a blanket hanging.

I live in Az and travel the state regularly with firearms, maybe Im just too relaxed to it but Ive never even thought twice about it. If your just driving through the res just dont speed and you wont have any issue... Ive never even been pulled over on the res and I dont even follow the advice I just gave.

Because, generally, if you have a CCW and get stopped, the cop knows right away. Not all states are reciprocal, so you need to know the laws of the state your going through. Most SW states are GTG but its smart to know. This might help.

Don't run out of gas, don't park and leave your shit unattended and/or unlocked. While often not the best places to live long term, driving through is no big deal. I've never heard of rez police jacking with anyone that wasn't a dickhead, though I'm sure it happens occasionally (just like anywhere else). If you're on the highway driving straight +/- 2mph of the posted speed limit I'd have a hard time believing anything would happen.

Did my residency and lived on the Crow rez in Montana and several other rez clinics. Never had an issue, had plenty of guns, met some good people and not so good, got to hunt and fish some on rez lands. Saw a lot of poverty and drug/alcohol abuse. Not unlike my rural south upbringing. That was 30 years ago though, things change and as said above every reservation is different. My biggest trouble was coming home at night and might be somebody passed out in the road or a 12 year old rolling a dually 75mph down a 2 track. Passing through I can't imagine an issue.
