Into the wild
Hi Guys,
I have an AICS stock and a Stiller Tac300 long action with a .308 bolt sitting in my safe.
I can‘t decide on what caliber to choose.

This project started with the 284 winchester in mind(with a 175 sierra bullet or 180gr Berger)
In the mean time, I bought an AIAW in .260 Rem.

Now i wonder if the .284 winch is of real advantage over the .260?
If not maybe I should move to a different caliber.

Secondly, I was thinking about one of the 300 or 338(RUM,Edge,...) with a magnum bolt on the same platform (AICS LA and Stiller Tac300) that will allow me to reach longer distance (1500 meters).
Caliber choice is difficult because i want to use the AICS mag.
Max oal is 3,6"
Thanks for your help

Re: AICS 1500 meters project

I would build a 280 remington. Basically a 7mm-06. That way all you need is a barrel and you get all the extra powder capacity.

I believe with the 284 you will need to go to a magnum bolt face but I could be mistaken.

Re: AICS 1500 meters project

A standard bolt will work with the 284 winch.
The 280 remington is also known in europe as the 7x64.
A good cartidge indeed, that should work fine with the high bc's 7mm bullets.

What about the 300RUM or 338 edge?

Re: AICS 1500 meters project

Don't know anything about the 300RUM or 338 edge. People are shooting out past 1500 with 7 WSM's shouldn't be any reason the 280rem couldn't reach that far.

7mm bullets are very attractive when you look at their BC.

Re: AICS 1500 meters project

Ok i will deal with the 280, 284 and 280AI.
These are the three that will work through the rifle you have. the 280 will give you the ballistics that the 284 will so i would not use it as tyhe 284 is just a better mouse trap. the 280AI will give you some more power but not a lot. I have used the 284 for a lot of F Class shooting and also have recently chambered a guys rifle for 284 Shehane we measured the volume of the fired cases from the standard chamber and the shehane their was only .9gr of water diference with the favour of the larger case going to the shehane. As you have a long action have the 284 Win long throated long and use the 175gr MatchKings they seem to be the best for performance and reliability. The 162 A Max has an advantage on paper but in real life we have not been able to get ehm to be consistant from batch to batch. The 284 with a long throat will pusht the 175gr MatchKings to 2900 accuratly i have also read the miraculas results with Re17 it has not come to the front with the commercialy available powders and any of the high pressure loads that have been tested have not shot well in varing temperatures.

the 280AI will give you a bit more velocity but will also heat up and wear out the barrel faster it is all up to you but a realy good performer is the bog stock 284 Win with necked up Lapua cases and H4831SC the cases last well and the rifles just shoot.

Hope this helps

Re: AICS 1500 meters project

Stick to the plan :)

Load the .284 Win long i.e about 3.15" to 3.2" with Lapua brass and Berger 180 VLD. Use a healthy does of VV N560 and you WILL shoot out to 1500m and more. .260 Rem will drop like a rock much earlier.

Of course you can play with 280 or 280 AI if you want. Get Lapua brass.

Choose what you want but make it something in .284 or the next step up is .338 Lapua or Norma. You can skip the .308 caliber alltogether unless you really want to get worse trajectories and more recoil :)

Basically you must decide how much energy you want to export and how far. If you need max power get a .338. If you can get by with less power on target then get a .284.

I have a .338LM and I am getting a .284 Win for less recoil, less powder usage, less weight on the rifle and just plain easier life

For sniper comps I can spare 4 lbs just on lighter ammo (100 rounds) and another 4 lbs on the rifle. I do not need a muzzle brake or suppressor so the rifle will shorter too than my 338LM.
