Rifle Scopes Am I going to need new rings?

Right now I'm using Burris Signature Zee rings in medium height. I currently have a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 mounted on it and it works perfectly. I ordered a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 and I'm wondering if it will fit in these rings or if I'm going to need to go with high rings? I figure if it was a 42mm scope it would fit no questions, but I'm not sure how much the Adjustable Objective adds to the size. I know the Center Point 4-16x40 I tested had a bit ao and it didn't want to fit in medium rings. So that made me wonder about this one. I'm just trying to figure out if I need to order a set of high rings, or if I can use these.

Here are a few pictures of what it looks like now with the 40mm Prostaff.

Just for reference on how much clearance there is, I tried to slide a pencil between the bottom of the scope and the barrel, and it wouldn't fit.

Re: Am I going to need new rings?

If you've alreadt ordered the new scope, I'd just wait till it came in and try it.

It's easy to say that the objective will be 1mm closer to the barrel, but it's not the objective that matters, it's the housing of the objective that kills you. Depending on how thick that is will tell you if you're ok or not.

Re: Am I going to need new rings?

As long as the tube size is the same, you'll be fine.

2mm is less than 1/10th of an inch. You'll have plenty of clearance.

Re: Am I going to need new rings?

I'd like it a little closer, and I'm positive only 2mm bigger would fit, but my experience with scopes with AO's is often times they are larger on the objective end because of the AO, so that's why I'm not sure if it will fit. Burris Specs on their site say it's 56mm in diameter while mine now says it's 48mm, so that's really an extra 8mm. I guess I will wait and see how it fits when it comes. I know I ran some tests with a Center Point 4-16x40 with an AO, and it was too close to the barrel in medium rings, but I'm not sure how this will be.

Only 1 mm further down. Your new scope will have plenty of clearance. Don't sweat it..

Re: Am I going to need new rings?

I know that the outside bell is much larger than the objective. But you are saying that going from a 40mm lens to a 42mm makes a difference on the outside diameter of 8mm? I guess the burris has a much thicker bell? In either case, your scope will definitely clear the barrel.

Re: Am I going to need new rings?

Well, I checked it out with some feeler gauges and it looked like I'd have enough clearance. Then I got the scope today, and I feel I have plenty of clearance left. I just thought I'd post this photo in case others were wondering.

Here it is with Burris Signature Zee medium rings.
