i dropped my gun and scope the other day in the field and i dropped it really hard!! I went to our field and set up some targets. I realized while i was here i might as well test it from ranges 100-500 yards. I was trying to make myself a drop chart i just haven't gotten around to doing it. My first target was set up at 100 yards and the scope moved 2 " down. I re-adjusted and its back to zero.

My second target was set up at 203 yards. My first 3 shots was 2" low and was about 1.25" at 200 yards, so i re-adjusted and made corrections on my drop chart and fired 2 more shots. This time my shots were 1: low and and it was an amazing 5/8" group at 200 yards. I re-adjusted for the last time and fired 2 more shots. this time it was 15/16" and just low of center!! man was i excited.

My third target was set up at 306 yards. My first 3 shots again were about 1.5" low and were an amazing 1.6" at 300 yards!! I fired a 4th shot and felt myself jerk and i was off. i re-adjusted and fired a single shot to see how my adjustment was and it was about 2.5 " high right above the center.

My third target was 500 yards on the nose. This was my second time with this rifle at ranges past 100 yards and it was the first time i really sat down to try. (first time was a bet between my old man, all his friends and myself) the wind was moving at this point and i fired another 2 shot group. They measured an amazing 2". it was off to the right about 4-5". The wind died and i fired another 2 shot group that was and INCREDIBLE 1.5" at 500 yards!!! I then asked my sister to fire the rifle. Her first time shooting this gun or anything bigger then 22. LR. and she hit the 500 yard target on her first shot!! she was in the bottom corner but still on the paper!

This is a factory remington model 700 sps varmint 243. win shooting factory federal premium 80 grain soft points!

I think if the rifle is capable of the accuracy you think it is, then you should shoot five shot groups.

Honestly, this is not a bench rest crowd around here. Most don't get excited about group size, especially those with only two shots.

Have fun.

Oh, and bragging with out pictures is also a FAIL.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

see this isn't a bench rest rifle. Its a factory Remington 700 243. win. I was shooting prone off a bi-pod. I bought this rifle as my way of introducing myself into long range shooting and hunting since my old man was the kind of guy who shot out too 150 yards at the max. Im hooked and im pretty excited.

i fired 2 shot groups cause it was getting dark fast and i was trying to introduce my sister into hunting and shooting so i brought the 22 LR along for her.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

I am glad that you are happy with your rifle's performance and I am glad that you tried to shoot out to 500 yards with 80 grain .243's in the wind. There's nothing wrong with that.

But I don't see what is amazing:

You dropped your rifle, then had to re-zero it. You shot a 3-shot group at 203 yards that measured about 1.5", then placed two shots within less than an inch of each other. At 306 yards you shot a 3-shot 1.6" group. At 500 yards you shot two shots within 2" and another two within 1.5" of each other. You claim that these 'groups' were precise but you indicate that they were not accurately placed on target.

And you see the problem with your claims of precision for two shots, right?

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

To me firing 2 shots waiting or adjusting Then firing 2 or 3 more is not shooting groups. Fire 5 shots, waiting enouh time in between to reload settle back down acquire your target, fire again...and so on until a 5 shot group. Only thing that matters is you are happy but if you're going to post about groups they need to be atleast a 5 shot and need to have pictures. Happy shooting.

here is a pic of a the 500 yard shots.

Im just starting this long range shooting. i haven't shot past 300 yards. I went online and printed a drop chart. I would fire from the data i had then make the correction. This was just the beginning. My plan for today was to make a drop chart and id like to think i have a great start.

It was my first time out this far and it wont be my last. My plan was to get a drop chart cause i was limited on time and next time was to really sit down and test this rifle.

I dont understand all the hostility here. I am only 17 years old trying to get into the long range shooting cause i am extremely interested and i haven't had a real positive feedback. i figured to have a nice shooting, or great start or something. Or even keep at it but next time try a 5 shot group to really test your ability and the ability of the rifle

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

Matt
I am glad you are interested in the shooting sports.
Getting hits at 500yards is great. It is remarkable those two shots were close together. Keep it up. Next time refine your point of aim and shoot 5 or 10 shot groups.
Welcome to the addiction.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

If you don't like hostility you could always try a different forum...just because you are 17 doesn't mean you are going to be treated differently on an online forum. Just grow some thicker skin, keep shooting, and zoom out a little on your next picture

just bustin' your balls man.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

Like the others have said welcome to the art of long range shooting. Repeat and rinse that 2 shot group 5 more times at 500 yds and then we will start talking. Granted you had little time to shoot, the difference in the two shots is good, if you can do that 5x more I will for sure give you all the credit in the world. Granted I won't know if you shot at 500 or 100 but I'll take your word for it.

Get some tough skin this forum isn't for... for a better choice of words... cats? Read some of the forums before posting and you won't get haggled. LL (LowLight) has a forum on 5 shot groups and what not. It will help you not get pissed on in these forums. Read the stickies and you should be fine next time you post.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

Glad you're excited about the new rifle. Take the ribbing in stride. Around here if you're going to post groups it has to be 5 shots. It's all in good fun.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

The other noobs are giving you a hard time because LL gave an edict on group shooting. there is a group shooting target like this:
target2.jpg

For close range shooting. When shooting at 500yards you can use any target but it must still be a minimum of 5 shots for shooting groups.
If you are just giving an example of POI shift after the rifle gets dropped the 5 shot rule is waived.
And these guys have been around enough to grow thick skin when the brothers are throwing hate on them for whatever the reason is. It is the interwebs after all.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

Way to get started man. Congrats on the hits at 500....you've actually probably done better then 99% of the shooters out there.

Most people want to see 5 shots as a group. 2 shots can be chance. Good luck, keep shooting.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

What kind of scope, rings, base etc.? Pictures of rifle would be nice too. And a snap shot of the land you shoot on. It always nice to see how fortunate others are and how nice it is to have enough land to shoot at a distance.

Glad you rifle is making you happy.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

First off congrats on the good group, but a few reasons everyone is bustin your balls: 1. you posted in all caps as it specially says not to. 2. you claimed something AMAZING that most if not all here have seen before and most have actually seen better. I know the great excitement of making those shots but be prepared when sharing on a forum cause if those results were at 2000yds, there will always be someone to point out the wrong. But dont get discouraged cause this is a great place to learn and good luck with your endeavor.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

A friend of mine, your same age, has the same rifle. He comes out with us to shoot 625 yards. The rifle is very capable. He hit the 6 inch disc 5 times in a row using 105gr Amax bullets. Try those and you will here the beetles for the first time.

+1 it is better to much more reading than posting. It's a do 100x more listening than talking type of thing. I would really like to see what the rifle would shoot at 500 yards 5 and 10 groups.

How did you decide on a .243?

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

i promise to everyone here who wants to see a 5-10 shot group that the second i get the chance i will and i will post it asap.

I wanted a gun that i could hunt coyote with and naturally i wanted the 22-250 rem. I then wanted a gun that i could start my journey into long range shooting so i figured i needed something that would buck the wind a little better. i already owned a 7mm rem mag and 300. wsm so i needed something in between. i wanted a gun that i could hunt whitetail with if needed, yet buck the wind at long range for targets and something for long range coyotes

243. win is an accurate cartridge so i started there and im incredibly happy with it.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

Sounds like you picked the right caliber to suit your needs. My father used to hunt deer with a .243. It always did the job. I always used his .270 Wby Mag.

Re: AMAZING RANGE RESULTS! TAKE A LOOK!!

If you reload for that 7mm it will easily outperform the 243 in the wind. You can easily push the 180 bergers which ballistically very hard to beat.

Good luck,
Merritt

Re: amazing range results! take a look!

Glad to hear your rifle is working for you. But really glad to hear that the scope was fine after a hard fall. I have that same scope and have done nothing but shoot with it. Now, I won't have to drop it to see if it is tough. Which retical do you have? Mine is the dead hold drop, which is kind of close on the highest power. Mine is on a 308.

What is happening is you are being accepted at face value, for what you post, as a member of a group of men and women who are serious shooters.

Some other sites offer themselves as mutual admiration societies with nothing but positive feedback for like-minded people. That might make the newer members feel good, but it teaches nothing. In contrast, here what you post will be criticized in efforts to a) increase your knowledge and help you shoot better; and b) increase our knowledge of what you are doing to help us shoot better.

We are not trying to make you go away. We are trying to understand what we are seeing, and when we do that your shooting gets criticized. But it's not mean-spirited. Welcome to the club!

Re: amazing range results! take a look!

Matt- my first couple of posts here were met with some hostility as well. But I learned a lot as I read and kept my mouth shut :p Welcome to the Hide and congrats on your shots.
