Gunsmithing Another 40X question....

Re: Another 40X question....

40Xs are not built to better tollerances than 700s, so all you would have after converting it is.....drum roll......a 700!
Sell that 40X off and just buy a 700, or better yet buy a custom action.

Gotta disagree with this one. While I don't have the tools or the know-how to measure the tolerances my 40X 7.62 Nato Repeater feels tighter and smoother than any of my 700's have felt... and shoots 1" groups at 300yds when I do my part. The 40X is a Custom Shop rifle.

However, I agree that you should NOT try to machine yours to be a repeater. It's gotta be more trouble than it's worth.

Re: Another 40X question....

If I remember correctly the 40X receiver is made on the same line as the 700 -- it just doesn't have the receiver cuts to mount the magazine box.

It's not made any straighter or tighter, it just doesn't have the hole in the bottom.

Re: Another 40X question....

Oneshot, glad you got a good one. Some are and some arn't. Some 700s are fantastic and some are sloppy as a garbage can. So you know. Remingon is a union shop. The custom shop employees are there by seniorty NOT skill level. I have worked on a lot of custom shop guns that have come through our shop. The quality of most of them is horrible for the price they get. Some of them are just flat out fucked up. I had to machine .035" out of a front base for a custom shop gun just to get the scope level. That's about 35 MOA looking up, not down. Custom shop quality is no better than the production line, you just get to order what you want for a very hefty price.

BTW, I currently own two 40Xs and a four of 700s. The rear base holes on one of my 40Xs are drilled about 25MOA to the left or the barrel is in crooked. It has a Unertl on it and most of my left wind is used up, but it shoots great. Custom shop quality.

Re: Another 40X question....

sinister, the 40x is done on a seperate line. that is why the serial numbers are a whole different lot. different machines. every line has gems and dogs. Product built on Monday or Friday are typically the worst but nobody really had control over that when buying.

Well I never claimed to be an expert on the matter so I guess I stand corrected. I did not know they were the same receivers. No matter, I love my 40X and I doubt I'd trade it for anything. It's only the second rifle I've owned as a civilian that performs as well as it does. The other was an SSG PIII MATCH that I bought from dlc356. Still kick myself for selling it!
