I haven't been online in a few weeks, been busy at work. But I managed to do some hunting too.

Killed 2 deer using 115grain SMK's last time I went out. I'm shooting an 18" barreled AR in 6.8SPC. First deer I could almost jumped on as it was a 15 yard shot. Second deer about 110 yards.

First deer died within 20 yards. Second died about 80 away from where I shot him only cuz I didn't wait but 5 minutes to go see where he fell. If i waited it would have been a 10 yard run.

So it takes 5 minutes for your deer to die after shooting him with a SMK? Shoot them with a bullet designed to kill such as a Nosler Ballistic Tip and they die RIGHT NOW! I have shot many deer with BT's and have yet to have one go more than 5yds and they are all dead by the time they hit the ground.

Re: Another SMK for hunting Thread

yeah, dont use lead balls at low velocity or broadheads either.

I don't see your problem

Well the 250gr smk seemed to work real well out of my trg 42 last night on the coyote that I turned to mush. "over kill" I THINK NOT!!!

So basically you're telling me that I'm an ineffective hunter because the deer I shot ran a little bit? I shot two does last season and they dropped on the spot using the same bullet same load. Deer, like humans, never die the same way unless you shoot them in the same spot using a ginormous caliber.

There is always a huge debacle here when someone says the SMK isn't a good hunting round. Its very effective as my experience with it can show. However it wasn't designed as hunting bullet because the lead core and copper jacket are not bonded which tends to cause fragmentation after impact(only bad if you make a gut shot or the bullet fragments into a large section of meat)

Re: Another SMK for hunting Thread

No I understand that animals will often run a ways with even a great shot and a good bullet. But an animal living 5 minutes after being shot is unacceptable unless it was a poor shot. If you hit him where it should be and it lives for more than 30 seconds you need to seriously consider your bullet selection.

Re: Another SMK for hunting Thread

according to sierra, the only difference in the match king and the game king is the glob of lead in the tip. i say use any bullet you feel comfortable with. a well placed shot with a match king will kill more effectively than a bad shot with a ballistic tip or "hunting" bullet.

Any time someone uses something different than the Reader does, it’s not a good bullet/Projectile.

I’ve been slingin’ lead balls for years that weight under 200 grains and travel near the speed of sound but not much more. You know what, Deer die from them. It’s not uncommon for deer to run 5 to 150 yards after, but they are dead with in 30 seconds to a few minutes, how ever long it takes for them to lose enough blood.

I sat in with my daughter last year for hunter’s safety and they were advising the kids to wait 20 to 30 minutes before going after the animal when hit with an arrow..........

If this OP had been hunting heavy dangerous game we would all be on him for not using a solid non-expanding bullet.......

Shoot whatever bullet you know can make into the vitals and you can hit accurately with. Choose your shots. Know yourself. Don't take shots out of your comfort zone.

Re: Another SMK for hunting Thread

sierra makes the bullets and they say to not use them for hunting.this is right out of their manual.i personally dont care what anybody uses but if they say no i listen and their hunting bullets shoot better than most hunters so why not use them? ed k
