Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

that sounds like a chinese riddle. Please explain what your looking to do with it, expectations, price range, these will help guys answer your riddle

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

Would like to shoot at least 3/4 moa groups, I would like it to be within the $800 or $700 range, something that I can slowly upgrade as I go.

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

A PSS or used 5R Milspec would work well, too.

VJJ, I like your Ghillie. Did you make 'er yourself?

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

Remington SPS Tactical, got mine for 600.00 and its a sweet shooter! If your near a Dicks Sporting Goods store they have 308 Varmint rifles for 549.00 (24 inch varmint barrels).

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

There are several savage models that fit your criteria, you could do a lot of research on savage rifles and find one that you like, all savage rifles I've shot have been sub MOA rifles.

+1 for this comment...

Lets not hear from the asswipes telling a guy to go buy a GAP or a TRG or an AI and put S&B on it while your there.

Thats certainly not a STARTER RIFLE!!!

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

Bought this as a bone stock Stevens 200 in 308 about 5 months ago then slowly replace most everything on it. Good starter in my eyes.

I started with a LTR but if I had it to do over again I would have gone this route.

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

There's a boat load of Savage rifles to start with. I love mine. Very accurate. Just swap the stock for the tacticool look a little increase in accuracy.

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

For that price it would be hard to beat a Savage out of the box. A Remington will shoot as good after you drop some money on it. I would hate to think how much I had to put into my Remington to finally get it to shoot with my Savage. But for 700-800 a Savage is hard to beat....

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

these guys have you covered.

savage or a remmy will get you going

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

rem 700 sps tactical, used rem 5r

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

used 5r milspec or save a bit more, buy new and break it in the way you want and know what has been done to it. SPS Tacticals are great too. first upgrade is stock though.

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

I like the Weatherby Vanguard S2 -- $449.00

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

I am very satisfied with my 700 SPS tactical and it is a VERY budget setup. I quickly replaced the rubbermaid hogue stock with a Bell and Carlson lightweight hunter and put a SS10x42 on top with the Leopold long range base.

Paid about $600 for the rifle, $450 on optics, rings, scope covers $200 on the stock (-$50 for the hogue), plus bipod, and duct tape for the cheek-rest.

If 7-800 is your TOTAL budget, I'd wait just a little. Sometimes it's better to just cry once. Another $200 into the setup will REALLY help you out. Instead of buying the Harris 6-9S bipod ($109) I bought the non-tilting 9-13 bipod ($75) which worked OK but I always longed for the real-deal. Long story short. I spent another $109 on the S model bipod for a grand total of $184. Long story short.
It's better to cry once.

Re: Any one know of a good 308 starter rifle?

Get a Savage with detachable bottom metal from the factory. You have a choice of different magazines to go with for a cheaper route into playing the high capacity game.

Saving the funds from the bottom metal addition will help go toward a very nice build. That would be my vote.

what everyone is not looking at is where the OP is from

including the OP -- at the prices you will have to pay, I do not think your expectations are in line with your price limits

best bet is to find what you can used, although I could not imagine the BS involved in private sales/shipping if it is even possible

I purchased one of the Dick's Sporting Goods M-700 ADL-V special runs that they sell for $549. You get a $50 rebate which, disregarding tax, has you in the rifle for $499. I removed and sold the stock and scope for a total of $100 which put me into the rifle for $399.

Had to purchase magazine components because the rifle is the ADL version + $50, so now I'm back to $449.

Added a Jewell trigger, B&C A5 adjustable tactical stock, Vortex Viper PST 6-24X 50mm FFP, Harris bi-pod (scarfed from another rifle) and the thing is 0.5" or better, depending on how my shakes are on a given day.

Completely satisfied.

Howa 1500

Sniper Central has some package rifle/scope deals that are nice way to get started.
