Good buddy of mine guides hunts on 330k acres in West Texas that is periodically closed for hunting and used by military for training. He come across a handful of these pieces, near a car that was completely destroyed, aluminum engine block melted into a puddle, and 20-30 small craters about 8x24”. Neither of us military-curious about identity of pieces. Not a great pic, but base of both identical.

Was told there was a large volume of shrapnel around the vehicle, this being one of several similar pieces. Is about 3” in diameter.

Was thinking mortar shell or some piece of ordnance from known military training exercises there, given craters and level of vehicle destruction, but no experience to draw from.

More what I was thinking, but have never seen the backside of one....nor been on the receiving end. Lots of respect for those who have.
