The 'Quick 'n Dirty AQT' targets (Project Appleseed) arrived today. The weather isn't looking to bad for tomorrow, so unless it's pouring rain I'll be out test driving this one to get familiar with it;

I won't be time shooting tomorrow. I just want to get familiar with the targets on this sheet with my Aperture sighted 10/22. I will say I like the looks of this target layout.

This target alone would be great IMHO for local clubs putting on a smallbore rifle match from 25 meters. There's lots of different things you could do with it.

Re: AQT Targets Arrived Today

I ordered them from the Appleseed Store;

http://www.appleseedstore.flyingcart.com/

I also just got back from the Range with my son who timed for me while I was giving these a test run in 21 degree weather and a 17 mph WNW wind. It was cold! My son didn't shoot as he has a jammed shooting finger from play HS Basketball.

Considering the conditions at the Range, I don't think I did so bad.

Target #1 - 201 (Sharpshooter)
Target #2 - 194 (Sharpshooter)

These are a challenge to shoot, no doubt about it. I really don't think I'd want it anyother way.

By the way, forgot to mention I used my Ruger 10/22 w/ TSR Aperture Sights.

Re: AQT Targets Arrived Today

Joe,
If you were to post pictures of your fired targets, some of the appleseed instructors here might be able to give you some advice.
By the way I have met and worked with tdow, and find him to be an
appleseed instructor and man of the highest quality.

Re: AQT Targets Arrived Today

Just came back from the Range where I gave it two more tries, once again with the Ruger 10/22, and also used the Marlin 795 on my second run. The weather was a bit nicer and the wind didn't have such a bite like it had this morning. (I also setup out of the wind on this second trip as best I could)

Here are the results.

Ruger 10/22 - TSR Aperture Sights - Federal 510B

Stage #1 - 46
Stage #2 - 43
Stage #3 - 42
Stage #4 - 80
Total.....211 (Expert)

Marlin 795 - Open Iron Sights - Federal 510B

Stage #1 - 49
Stage #2 - 49
Stage #3 - 43
Stage #4 - 88
Total.....229 (Expert)

In this stage in my life I seem to be getting a better sight picture with the open square notch sight I have on the Marlin 795. With the 10/22 I've been struggling with the Aperture Sights. I attribute this to the past 30+ years of shooting traditional open sight muzzle loading competitons. These days I'm just more comfortable with open iron.

I did slow my pace down somewhat with both rifles, and with both rifles during the shooting of Stage 3 (60 seconds) - as soon as I broke the last shot my son called "Cease'Fire." I would have thought that would of happened on the 50 second Stage 2 before it ever happening on Stage 3, but I actually had some time to spare on Stage 2 (not quite 10 seconds) my son told me each time after Stage 2. So I need to work a bit on time management I think?

Again I would highly recommend these targets to anyone with an interest in this. And be sure to have someone time you during each Stages if possible, and keep those fundamental shooting mechanics (Natural Point of Aim, Breathing, Squeezing the Trigger, and Shot Follow Through) working for you and not against you,,, and add in making smooth Magazine changes.

I'll add one more thing here. I do believe through shooting our Sniper's Hide (25 Yard) Short Range Match using the TQ-3/5 target, it has helped me with these targets.

You would need to shoot a timed overall score of 210 minimum if that's what your goal is according to the AQT information on the target.

Is it a all or nothing? How many chances do you get to qual?

No, there is different scoring for different point ranges.

In Appleseed, you can take as many times as you need. It took me my second target, as the feller on my right threw one of his shots onto my target.

I carry the patch in the left (small) pocket of my concealed carry vest. I like having it on me, but don't want it sewn on as I do not call attention to my firearms addiction - don't want people to suspect I have a firearm on me.

Appleseed is fun and rewarding. Everyone, in my opinion, should give it a try even if Rifleman is not made.

This is a very similar AQT target, printable for free: http://ironat500.blogspot.com/2007/07/aqt-target.html

I think one of the Appleseed Instructors around here could answer this better. My understanding is that it's an all or nothing. If you don't make it you pay the money again and give it another try if you're a male adult 21 years of age or older. (20 & under, as well as women shoot for free)

I think there are folks who really could use the instruction block, and regardless if they make the 210 needed to fire Rifleman they could gain shooting mechanics from it, or refresh their shooting mechnics.

Here are some links to check their program out;

I think these AQT targets are well worth the money regardless if one follows up with a trip to an AS Project event. They are challenging when used within their time constraints, and could very easily be adapted to useage within a local club's shooting matches for something different from 25 meters.

Nice shooting Josh!

Thank you, Mark.

Just for the heck of it I think the next time I have my son time me on one of these practice targets - I'm going to take 20 shots in Stage 4 rather then 10 - then doubling that for score, just to see how that pans out. As the scoring stands now (which is fine) a person could never score an uneven overall score in Stage 4 - because of the doubling of points.

In a way, I'm not sure this favors the shooter's overall score whereas they might shoot the first 10 shots scoring (38 points) and the second string of 10 shots they may score (39 Points) - so under the existing scoring system of doubling the above 38 points from the original 10 shots (76 points) the shooter would loose loose 1 point from the second string of 39, rather then adding the two together for 77 points. That one point might be the difference in Rifleman status?
