Gunsmithing ar-10 308 to .260 conversion?

someone told me that a .260 round is just a necked down .308, so my question is: if that is a fact, to convert a regular ar-10 into a .260 would it only be necessary to change barrels? will the clips, bolt, buffer etc. stay the same?

Yes all the same and they are called magazines
